New stylus for AT20SL or buy a Nagaoka MP110

Post by Big_T » 11 Apr 2019 04:43

Hello I have an Audio Technica AT20SL limited cartridge. My wife lovingly dusted the stylus off, bless her heart  . In my despair and haste I purchased a replacement stylus from Ebay for about $25. I know this is not the proper stylus but with my current situation with young family and such I do not have the expendable income to justify a genuine replacement stylus at the moment.

My question is this: Should I sell the AT20SL cartridge to fund the purchase of a New Nagaoka MP110 or wait for a while and build up funds to purchase a proper replacement stylus.

My Current Chain:

Technics SP10 MK2
Grace g704
AT20SL Limited > Ebay Stylus
Schiit Mani
Accuphase P300
Pioneer SP-BS22 / Tanoy Proto J Studio Monitors

Many thanks

The MP-110 is a nice cartridge but it is a big downgrade from the AT20SL. Instead of spending money on an MP-110, I would suggest saving your money until you can get a new stylus for the AT20SL — or buy a new Audio-Technica VM95ML. The VM95ML is a superb cartridge with a nude MicroLine diamond and it would be a better alternative than the MP-110, in my opinion.

I wouldn't downgrade to the 110 either, if it's something you'll need to be living with for some time. Every time you play a record you may get that yearning for what you had previously, that insufferable gnawing that gnaws and gnaws... :D

LP Gear sells a Shibata replacement stylus for the AT20SL for a little less than the VM95ML cart and a little more than a new MP110.

Agree that any advanced profile vs. a .4 x .7 bonded elliptical is a serious downgrade. Don't fall for the Internet hype on the MP-110. There is nothing special about that cartridge.

The Nag 110 is a good cart for it's price is all. Lotta folks want to do the happenin' vinyl thing on a tight budget.

Thanks Guys, I was actually ready to go either way but after reading your affirmations it seems that waiting and saving to get a proper stylus for the AT20 seems like the way to go. Also I'm sure I would regret selling it in a few years.

Do you know how this replacement stylus would compare to the original? There has been some talk that the originals might have had a beryllium cantilever. Not sure if that makes a huge difference or not.

The build quality is not the exact level as the genuine stylus - bonded tip on straight cantilever vs. nude diamond on a tapered cantilever of the ATN20. If it makes an audible difference - who knows...?

The beryllium cantilever was used at the AT15SS & AT20SS.

Regards.

If you cannot get an OEM stylus for the old AT it may make more sense to just buy a new AT cart with an advanced profile, assuming it is a good match for your tonearm and phono preamp.

I was playing an LP by Alberta Hunter called Amtrack Blues. Had the record for years. Tonight I was playing it thinking to make a digital transfer of it. It's a hot sounding record, heavy in the low treble. Messing around with what cart to transfer it with and viola ! The Nag 110 came through, it was just right. I was impressed with how well it did with this record as I have been at times in the past. The 110 may seem humble but it punches above its weight in certain contests.

To the thread starter, I think your query to me about the AT20SL stylus was answered by someone else as best as I could have. Good luck.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you could use an ATN15SS stylus on the AT20SL cartridge body.
Perhaps someone can verify this.
This page seems to indicate they are compatible:
https://thevoiceofmusic.com/catalog/par ... ategories=

This site has an original ATN15SS for sale.
https://goldringstylus.com.au/shop/styl ... qd-stylus/

Prices are in Australian dollars, so do the conversion.
These are quite rare now, so this may be your last chance.
I just bought another stylus from them and had it shipped to New York state using their cheapest shipping method. It took about a week, which was faster than I expected.

Sunwire, The ATN15SS indeed will work. :) Both are classified as Group E. With shipping approximately 164.00 from down under. A genuine AT stylus with a Beryllium cantilever for a little more than the LP Gear version. I hope to get my ATN 152LP stylus from them this week.
My advice to the OP, save your money till you can get the proper replacement.
Cheers,
WillO

Many thanks for the replies and info! I am saving for a proper replacement.

In the mean time I'll be playing my 2 dollar records with the ebay stylus  . It does not seem to be destroying them as I feared. After working it in for a few hours it sounds something towards moderately acceptable but nothing like the real thing especially in the low end.

The waiting will be worth it.
