Shure M97 cartridge stylus

Post by viperz » 20 Mar 2019 14:21

Hi all, I have successfully used N95ED stylus on M97xE body before with good results.

I just bought a vintage M97 cartridge. Would N95ED stylus work on this older M97 cart, or do I have to go with N97xE stylus? Would any other stylus besides N97HE or N97xE fit this M97 body?

Thank you.

A lot of needles will work. While a 97xe needle will work, I’d suggest a vividline as it is cheaper and sounds better.

The question really is - will N95ED work in M97 body? Someone told me that M97 and M97xE cartridge bodies are different.

They are different. And Jico has styli for them, which are on par with originals.

I have a Jico N97HE and think it's quite nice. I find the Shure N92xE somewhat lacking.

Seconded on that thought, szinger. I loved the original Shure M 97 series (also had the SC 39 series counterpart in the broadcasting world) a lot. aka Poor man's V 15 Type IV (I liked the M 97 better in real life then, and the stylus options were versatile).

I came across this chain as I am also an owner of an old Shure M 97HE EraIV cartridge and searching for a good stylus for it. (Running now with a generic 95ED with stylus guard removed.

The question: has someone really tried to fit a 97xE-type stylus in it? Some say they don’t like the sound while others say the fit is impossible (width of the shaft, shape of the plastics). Jico has a variety of fancy styli for 97xE, which is technically the inferior version.

Many people don't know about the SC 39 ( poor man's V 15 Type IV ).
I have a pair of them, and prefer the SC 39 over my M97Xe.

The SC 39 is better, as was the original M97 (the Era IV version).

I've still got one of those M97HE Era 4 carts, never did get around to replacing the stylus on it though, in fact my nephews using it on his Rega Planar 1 right now , seems to work OK!
