if money no object, what cartridge for SME 3009 S2 imp on Thorens TD-150

Post by terzinator » 22 Feb 2019 04:56

I drive old, paid-for cars, so I can put some money into my turntable.

I have a Thorens TD-150 that I love. Homemade walnut plinth. Stock arm with a Shure M95ED cart, Jico SAS stylus.

I'm gonna put a vintage SME 3009 S2 Improved Fixed Headshell TA on the deck, and I'm mulling over what cartridge to fit.

I'll probably put my exsting Shure cart on the arm to start with. But i'm looking for some feedback on what different carts will inevitably change my life.

The amp is an English-made Audiolab 8000A integrated. Yes, not an audiophile situation, but it's a placeholder for a couple of years. Still sounds great, and I don't know that I'll add a phono preamp until later. The 8000A has separate inputs for MM and MC.

Considerations:

Ortofon 2M Black MM
Denon DL-301 MKII MC
Hana SL MC
Audio Technica AT440 MM
Grado Gold2 MM

open to others.

Discuss.

Money is a very big object then with your limited budget, no problem, next suggestion would be a Sumiko Blue Point Special. About $500

Ok, interesting. A high-output MC cart.

Now some folks think the Audiolab's phono stage is ok for MM, but MC is iffy. Not sure I care about that or believe them, but convince me a MC is better than an MM cartridge for this arm.

Try and get a good denon 301 (not the 103!) from japan - then put on some ella & satchmo from verve and you will be in outer space ;)

Grado gold 2 and if you dont like it which sure you will get it retipped with a Paratrace. Stock it is 90 odd percent of the Statement reference 2 and that is very very good indeed.
Chris
Edit.. will be getting some lower Grado from the 2 range to test soon, big question I have is how much difference is the silver or blue, when they get to 4 piece cantilever and they all have the same stylus how much difference can there be? Hope to find out..

Ortofon OM 40, a superb match (without weight plate), and has a Fritz Gyger line contact. An optimal choice for a SME 3009 S2 Improved arm.

The M95ED with JICO SAS is actually a perfect match for that tonearm. You'd have to spend a lot of money to match the performance of that combo. The 2M Black comes close, but personally I prefer the SAS diamond over the 2M's Shibata diamond in terms of detail retrieval and tracking ability.

I'm a huge fan of the AT440MLb and I prefer it slightly over the M95ED/SAS, due to it having a wider sound stage and a bit more "air" or "in the same room as the performers" quality. Despite its lower price, I'd choose the 440 over the 2M Black if I was trying to decide between those two.

I'm not going to try and talk you into my suggestion as you can see everyone else is pushing their choice as the Holy Grail and everyone else's choice is inferior, welcome to audio forums.

Not seeing that the PTG is readily available in the US, but looks like the AT33 EV is.
