Shure SK - Stylus Needed

Post by gliderdriver » 14 Jan 2019 17:55

Hi ... I'm getting back into vinyl - have a Kenwood KD-1033 ... with a Shure cartridge that has SK imprinted on the front. I need a new stylus - but searches on Amazon (using Shure SK) do not clearly show me what I need. Also ... perhaps I should upgrade the cartridge and stylus ... any specific recommendation would be welcome. Thanks.

I removed the cart and now see it is a M95HE ... I have located a number of replacement stylus for ~ $20 ... I assume these are OK to start out ... thanks.

HE is for hyper elliptical, a stylus shape. For $20 you probably bill have elliptical, at best, or even spherical.

OK ... thanks ... I did some reading on the evolution of stylus shapes ... thanks for your information on price vs shape.

JICO seems to make a high quality HE replacement ... although the price seems to be higher than I remember back in the day when LPs were the best recording technology ... are the stylus prices high today simply because consumer volume is lower ?

It's just inflation, that's all. The M95HE dates to about 1982, I believe. The average price of a house in 1982 was $47,000. Today it's $218,000.

Likewise, the Shure M91ED sold for $39.95 in 1982; adjusted for inflation, that would be $103.96 in 2018 dollars.
