Good P mount reccomendation? T4P

Post by rjp » 22 Dec 2018 16:55

I am looking for a T4P cartridge for a Technics SL-QD33 TT. I see so many recommendations for the AT-92E, but apparently it just went out of production in the past year, and now that that cartridge is no longer available new it has become hard to find and expensive. What are some good alternatives?

The AT-85EP is listed as the replacement for the AT-92E on some sites. It's specs don't look as good though if that matters.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077Q ... 0DER&psc=1

Thanks for any help

EDIT: I have two old cartridges with questionable styli: an AT TC236EP, and Ortofon TM-14. Are either of these worth getting a new stylus for vs buying a newer cartridge? Are either of these better than the AT-85EP mentioned above?

Did some checking on LP Gear site: AT85EP - frequency 20Hz-20kHz, 0.3 X 0.7 ml stylus, 3.5mv output, cost $39.00
AT Reference Series 3003 - frequency 15Hz-27kHz, 0.3 X 0.7 ml stylus, 5mv output, cost $39.98
The Series 3003 also comes with 1/2 inch mount adapter for standard mounting if you so choose.

I personally have the LP Gear (AT) Reference Series V with the Shibata stylus, love it. So in the price range of 39.00 I think that I would choose the Reference Series 3003 based on slightly better stats over the AT85EP.

It looks like LP gear is a store as well as a review site. In fact it’s the only place I can find the AT 3003 you mentioned listed. Is that a good place to buy?

Have purchased several items from LP Gear over the past few years and have not had any problems. Most of which were replacement styli. The AT Performance Series V cartridge I mentioned being one of the items. I would have no qualms about purchasing a new cartridge from the site. Different people have varied experiences with mail order some seem to attract less than stellar service and others have no problems. I seem to be one of those that does not have problems. Don't get me wrong I have had an odd problem over the years, however none with LP Gear. So based on my experience I would say try it you might like it.

I notice you list T4P-Ortofon TM14 in your signature. How does it compare with the AT 3003?

rjp: Look for the AT450 offered by US Ebay vendor "wolfsbigbadgarage" for ca. 60 bucks - that's basically a renamed AT316EP, while the AT92E(CD) and the 3003 only are renames of the AT311EP.

I found the listing Manfred. It is USD 60.02 currently.

What makes this cartridge/stylus special? It's all new to me so just looking to learn here. What qualities of the AT316EP make it better than the AT311EP? Is it the stylus or is the cartridge different as well? I see it is a nude stylus, and from what I've been reading those are highly praised. What makes them better?

Thanks for helping.

If i remember correctly, the 3003 is from the lineage of the 8008 reference series from the 1990s. It was about TOTL back then.

I have an AT331LP which was considered about the same as the 8008. It was TOTL. Its a VERY GOOD cart, and T4P also. I'm thinking the AT311 is a step down from that cart, but the same lineage. Can't get the Line Contact stylus anymore from AT, but the LP Gear Vivid Line is a darn good substitute.

But for the money, I really like the ADC PSX 30 OR 40 T4P cartridges. Only recently did LP Gear run out of them. You can get them on eBay occasionally. The 40 stylus was nude. The 30 stylus was a very good elliptical. These were made by Azden, Japan, and are Magnetic Induction, carts, not MM. Some call them Moving Iron. They are highly detailed and smooth as silk. There are still a few places that have NOS styli for them. I stocked up. I have 2 linear tracking tables I use them on. Just for giggles Ive been known to mount them on my pivot arm tables using the 1/2" adapter. They sound very good indeed. Also, LP Gear has aftermarket upgrade for the styli, elliptical and Vivid Line.

CORRECTION: LP GEAR no longer has the styli. But, there are other places to get styli, both NOS and aftermarket.

Wolfie: Yup, the 8008 basically was a renamed AT331LP, whereas the 6006 was a renamed AT316EP (just like the AT450 I've suggested).

rjp: The bodies are basically all the same, with just some slight differences in terms of visual appearance (formost the colour or respectively colour scheme). The relevant differences are in the needles. So the AT450 basically buys you an AT301P family body with a blue version of the ATN3472NE - the latter featuring a nude diamond with rectangular shank and medium-sharp elliptical tip. Main advantage over the ATN3472SE is that the rectangular-shanked nudie is quite a bit lighter than the bonded diamond on the ATN3472SE, but it also pretty automatically ensures a correct orientation of the tip profile. In addition, the nudies generally tend to be more thoroughly polished.

Update: I received the AT450 a few days ago and it does look brand new and sounds excellent. Thanks for the recommendation. Is there a specific ideal tracking force for this cartridge and stylus? The tonearm has some adjustment. (SL-QD33)

RJP, 0.75 to 1.5 grams (1.25 grams optimum). I have the same turntable in a box somewhere. The cart too.

Great. I will set it to 1.25 using a scale.

Also needing either a couple AT 92E type replacement styli, or maybe another extra T4P style cartridge or so, I thought I would resurrect this thread and ask what's a safe, affordable choice, and that is made within specs. While a buget Realistic turntable I just took camping would probably be fine with the current AT offerings, I'm thinking a nicer Sony direct drive I've been meaning to put back to use might deserve something nicer, like the AT-450 stylus. Having limited funds these days for such needs, I wanted to ask if anyone has more recent recommendations before purchasing. I'm a little skeptical about NOS styli as the suspension collapsed on a practically unused conical I bought 20 years back for the Realistic, however the likely even older OEM stylus from the Sony with unknown hours I reluctantly borrowed for the trip is still holding, and sounds choice.
