Stylus compatibility AT95E / AT-VM95

Post by themisto462 » 15 Nov 2018 10:39

I think that, since the new AT-VM cartridges were introduced, many of the owners of the AT95E would like to know, whether it is possible to upgrade their cartridge with a new stylus of the VM95 series. Especially since there are now more advanced styli shapes available.

Well, short said: It is possible. :D

The new AT-VMN95 styli fit perfectly to the old body. That of course also applies to an AT93, AT3400 (and their variations) and all the OEM versions with the same body shape.

But if you wonder, whether it is possible to use the old ATN95 or ATN95X or similar - that won't work. The plastic body of the needle is too high for the new styled cartridge body.

Thanks for reading and "happy upgrading". :D

Wonder if the old fits the new body?

Chris: Quite obviously not, as the mounting frame of the VM95 family bodies will reach farther down the sides of the generator shell - so the side walls of the old AT3400 family needles (including the ATN93, ATN95 E and ATN95EX) would collide with the mounting frame, preventing proper needle insertion.

Has anyone tried installing a VM-series cartridge on a Rega P3? I wonder if the VTA is right. The P1/P2 should be ideal, because the new VM cartridges are the same height as the factory-installed Rega Carbon.

Rake angle is not that important, 8mm up at rear is only 2 degrees change in rake angle which is nothing.

Why not swap the plastic mounts? For example, put the old AT95 plastic mount onto the VM95 generator body. Are not the generator bodies of the AT95 and VM95 the same? If so then you can migrate your old styli to the new VM95. One may ask why do this? Well, I have a nice ATN95P (Paratrace) stylus so that's a good enough reason!

The generators of the AT95 series and VM95 series are not the same (VM95 has higher inductance and resistance than AT95), but AT95 series styli will fit and work on VM95 series bodies. There's no need to swap mounts. AT95 series styli will mount correctly on VM95 series bodies without any modifications to the stylus or the cart.

Yes, I’m aware of the internal design changes, but I thought the external metal cartridge bodies were the same, so that swapping the plastic mounts might be a more elegant solution perhaps. I don’t have a VM95 at the moment to compare the metal bodies.

Bodies are different, but the vm stylus fits the older 95e body, but the older stylus ie 95e will not fit the new vm body.

And if you fit a new VM95 stylus to an old 95 body, you will need to realign for best results; the mounting-hole to stylus-tip distance is not the same.
