Replacement stylus for a Grado Black cartridge

Post by reynolds753 » 06 Nov 2018 01:14

I picked up a Dual 505-3 turntable this weekend. I bought from the original owner and it is about 30 years old. It has a Grado Black cartridge and stylus. Given its age, I assume that it is a Grado 1 not a 2. Can I replace the stylus with a Grado Black 2? I have never owned a Grado cartridge before. Any additional thoughts on this cartridge are welcomed.

V2 without hesitation.

I have one on a old ZF1 and like it a lot.

Grado's have their own thing going, some like it, some not.

Mine is great on a Dual 1218, Wonderful for acoustic Jazz. (and other things)

I would be inclined to spend another $25 and buy a new Grado2 cartridge for $75. The replacement stylus alone will cost you $50. So, for another $25 you'll have new cartridge with a stylus that is made for it.

I've owned both the Black1 and Black2 and much prefer the 2.

Just my 2 cents.

Just a word of caution if you plan on changing the entire cartridge for new Grado and you are using the Dual plastic alignment tool. Basically don’t use it! Some 30 years ago I trashed my Grado using the tool. The 505.3 may have changed, but if your has the removable cartridge sled, be very careful!
