Goldring 2300 - Height on a Rega Planar 3 (RB330 tonearm)

Post by arkdog » 20 Oct 2018 08:54

Hey Guys,

I've taken my first step up from beginner gear, and scored both a Rega Planar 3 (2016), and through a friend a very good deal on a Goldring 2300 (http://www.goldring.co.uk/record-cartri ... i/2300.htm)

I've very carefully taken the steps through setting up the tone arm, balancing, aligning the cartridge, and I'm now at the stage of ensuring the force is correct. Goldring suggest the playing weight of 1.75g and once I've set this on the tonearm, I've noticed that in the raise position, the stylus is barely above the mat.

Now at this stage, I'm a little unsure whether I've done something wrong in the set up. Or whether this stylus is genuinely too tall for the Rega Planar 3 (with RB330 tonearm).

Before I start retracing my steps on my setup, does someone or anyone know for certain based on the specs (or previous experience) that the Goldring would need spacers on the RB330 tonearm?

Majority of non Rega cartridge will benefit from a spacer. Rega's cartridges are only 15 mm tall. 17 to 19 mm is more common, the difference defines the spacer required. Spacers/shims are inexpensive and easy to install. Rega offer a spacer with 4 height adjustments.

The clearance over the mat can be adjusted by loosening the set screw on the arm lift and just raising it up a bit. A typical adjustment when changing to a different height cartridge.

Enjoy the new cartridge, seems a nice one.

Yes Rega cartridges are smaller than most here is my Rega Elys compare to a Nagaoka (MP11 Boron)

If you fit a spacer (2mm or 3mm etc.) you might not have to adjust the amount of arm lift as the spacer will move the stylus higher compared to the mat.

If you want to run without a spacer then you will need a 0.050" (1.27mm) or a 1.30mm allen key to slacken the grubscrew so you can lift the plastic quadrant a small amount on the metal shaft and then re-tighten. You will not need to move it much as 1mm at the quandrant is about 7-8mm at the cartridge end.

Here is a photograph (of my RB300) that shows the allen key fitted into the grubscrew ready for adjustment.

Thank you guys! Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Raising the lift will Help - 1m should do the trick. I might just order some of those rega spacers anyway just in case.

I've triple checked my alignment, and weight force and it's all at around 1.75g which is what Goldring recommends. Assuming based on this, and it sounding ok, i should be ok without those spacers, until i change the platter or mat etc.
