Technics EPC 205 c Mk3... How good ??

Post by jvsantosmd » 30 Aug 2018 22:20

I am putting the finishing touches on a very lightly used SP 15 that I recently bought, I am installing a brand new never used EPA B 500 base with its EPA A 501-E tonearm. Finished building a solid wood base using super rare very dense ironwoods from the Caribbean (Manilcara bidentata). Manuals and several forum members have recommended to use Technics EPC 205c Mk3 MM cartridge. I looked them up and they are in the price range of several very good MC cartridges. Are they that good?

IF (and big if) you can get one where the suspension hasn't crumbled then it's one of the best cartridges ever made.

I use the EPC-U205CMK3 (universal mount) in an EPA-100 arm (as part of complete SL-1000MkII package). I use it with the Jico SAS aftermarket stylis so don't know how it compares with the original. I prefer the Technics over cartridges like Denon DL-304 and Nagaoka MP-500. As always YMMV.

I don't profess to know the differences between the different 205 models, but I have a 205C-II and a 205C-IIX, and they are both quite nice...even with used styluses.

One question I have regarding aftermarket replacement styli is: Are all 205 stlyuses interchangeable?

There are some very nice replacements still being made (e.g., by JICO), but I wonder how model-specific they really are :-k

Like many users, I bought a "JICO EPS 205 EX SAS Stylus for Technics EPC 205 CII" to go on my EPC-U205CMK3. They also adapt to your 205C-IIX and even (from memory) to 205CMK4. It must be the same for JICO non-SAS styluses.

I can't seem to find the way to post an item for sale. Nevertheless, I am looking to sell my EPC-P205C MK3 T4P. This is the P-Mount product but has the 1/2" adapter included, for standard headshell. I bought this cartridge new, back in the day. I played about 10 albums on it and then changed to an Ortofon MC cartridge. I continued to buy several other cartridges, enjoying them all, but never went back to this Technics. I liked it very much, but sort of forgot about it. It has been stored in a box, in a drawer, never seeing sunlight ever since. It is effectively in "new" condition. I believe it would serve someone else, especially someone with a P-Mount turntable, better then it would ever serve me again. That seems like a more appropriate home for it. Checking around on the internet I see that used ones are going for between $300 to $500, depending on condition. I would be happy to let this go for $400 and considering how "new" it is that seems like a very fair price. Again, I don't know how to post this on Vinylengine. If someone is interested please reply and let me know. Maybe your contact information?
I don't want to violate any Vinylengine policy, but for now I don't know what else to do. I just believe this will do better for someone with a P-Mount turntable, considering how rare it is to find a perfect match and with a cartridge that is in this perfect condition. I will check this forum every few days. I think this site will notify me as well. I hope this works well for someone.

I have not sold anything on vinylengine yet but the good place seems to be here viewforum.php?f=106 and create a new topic.
