I also posted this link in the What about cheap Chinese cartridges? thread, but thought this news was worthy of it's own thread:

IFA 2018: Audio-Technica launches new entry-level VM95 cartridge series, featuring the next generation model of the legendary AT95E:

One body that supports six stylus types (conical, bonded elliptical, nude elliptical, line contact, shibata and 78rpm).

Is there any way to merge the two threads? I didn't see the other thread about the AT95E being discontinued until after I posted my thread announcing the new VM95 line.

VERY smart on AT's part. They'll sell millions of them. :-)

Given that the cart is the same for conical (£30) through to Shibata (£180), is this an admission that, at least for lower priced cartridges, only the stylus really matters and that a cartridge is as good at £30 as it is at £180?

Ortofon did/do it with OM series 5 to 40

Yes, which further reinforces the position.

So is the generator going to be the same?

It would appear so. From the first paragraph of the provided link:

"the six-strong VM95 range boasts the same body design to enable easy interchange and upgrade of any AT-VMN95 stylus-type:

Here's the link to the press release on the Audio Technica US web site:

https://www.audio-technica.com/cms/news ... index.html

No mention of pricing, but again, it appears the bodies are all identical:

"All models have removable styli and the same body design, enabling vinyl enthusiasts to interchange and upgrade any VM95 cartridge with any VM95 stylus type."

At least Ortofon separated the 2M series into two levels, with better materials for the Bronze/Black. You do get more from the upgrade than just a better stylus.

Assuming quality materials are used in the construction of the generator, I have no problem with the concept of simply upgrading the stylus. And, again, ASSUMING that I liked the sound of the cart enough to want to upgrade.

But, I like Ortofon's strategy better. Similar design, with a definite family resemblance, but NOT the same.

Can somebody give a rough approximation of those figures in US dollars?

Is that a Euro? Pardon me, I am an ignorant American... :D

I am curious to try one when they come out.

I also like the look of the headshell - hope they offer that separate!

I just noticed from the photos that two lower cartridges are China and the rest are Japan?

Hi,

Unless mentioned otherwise by AT it looks like the same AT95 engine with a new plastic enclosure with threaded inserts, and new stylus options.
