I hate when this happens...

Post by Jdog1958 » 07 Jul 2018 08:59

I decided to try and mount the $24 LS300 to see if it was any good.

After setting it up, aligning it and all that, I was disappointed to find it was only producing sound from one side. I went to grab my multi-meter, but it had a dead battery! :-x I was going to pull the leads for now until I could get a new 9V battery, but noticed something about the green wire...

Busted!
Not surprised as these are the leads that came with the original SL-Q2 turntable and headshell that I bought back in about 1980. It's seen several cartridge changes over the years. Time to buy some new ones I guess and probably a spare set as well!

You didn't need a meter for that one!

You can probably repair that one wire if you have a soldering iron.

Very annoying! That has happened to me on a few occasions. I now have plenty of extra wire sets in my parts bin. You never know when those old ones will decide to quit.

I probably could have soldered it, but they seem flimsy anyway. I already ordered some. And not the $86 Ortofon or the $95 Clearaudio sets I saw on Amazon.

I think $95 for headshell wires is crazy.

Love my SL-Q2! With an Audio Technica VM540ML it’s an awesome turntable, approaching the performance of the SL-1700MK2 I’m restoring. By the way, I’m using litz headshell wires on a standard Technics headshell. Enjoy!

I agree.
A two inch piece of wire is not going to sonically effect anything, despite what the obsessed crowd believes.
And if they actually knew anything about fundamental electricity, its properties, resistance of wires, etc, they'd probably think twice about wasting tons of money.

As long as anyone is stupid enough to pay $95 for headshell wires, there will always be a market for it.
IMO it's way beyond borderline retarded...

Indeed, $5.00 is plenty to spend for head shell wires on a typical turntable, certainly with a $24 cartridge.

However, keeping all things in proportion...those $95 head shell wires may be appropriate on a $3000 cartridge mounted in a $6000 tone arm.

It's still a waste of money.
Two inches of wire is two inches of wire.

Merely your opinion.

Two inches of silver wire with precision connectors is not two inches of aluminum or low grade copper wire with inexpensive stamped connectors.
But probably only someone with an advanced education in electrical engineering, metallurgy, and high end audio component design could appreciate the differences. :D
