Favorite Stylus for STANTON 600 ?

Postby pinenut » 17 Apr 2018 02:09

Hey folks, I recently bought 4, NOS Stanton 600 bodies which have all had their styli removed and sold seperately. The bodies were had cheaply enough, so I thought I’d give ‘em a try. It’s my understanding, that they’ll take the same styli as 680 & 681, and they’re similar sounding bodies.
Need to know what the nicest sounding, currently available (aftermarket) stylus is for the 600 body. I don’t want to spend the big $ to locate NOS originals.
Anyone presently enjoying a 600 series with a nice, aftermarket stylus? One that’s not too costly..?

There are lots of NOS for those floating around, cheap. No need to pay big bucks or resort to 680/1 styli.

I see two of those samples have enclosed bolt holes and two are open - different dates of manufacture?

The top black plastic mounting bracket is removable to accommodate different tonearms. I think they came with several different ones when new.

I think 680/681 styli need to be trimmed slightly to fit the 600/V15 Micro IV, due to interfering with the mounting bracket. Pickering XV15 styli fit perfectly and work fine, though.

As mentioned, theoiceofmusic.com has a number of OEM and aftermarket styli for the 600/V15 Micro IV.

These pickups are quite nice.

I own a couple of needles for them. One is the Pickering DAT and the other is the Pickering DAME.

If you could find an NOS, go for the Stanton D6071A.
It's a conical that is similar to my Pickering DAT.
These were 'Broadcast Standard' pickups, with very descent sound.
They perform well.

By the way, Stanton 680/681 and Stanton 600 are two different series.
Both moving iron but with different inductance/resistance.
Normally, they weren't intended for using needles interchangeably.

Thanks for that. I just ordered two of those D6071A styli, despite their rather heavy tracking requirement of 2-4 grams. I’ll give that stylus a try on my less than perfect records, and if the sound is decent, I’ll then look around for some genuine D6003EE - if they not too costly.

Thanks, everyone!

This pickup is a cross-breed between the Stanton 680 and 500 series.
Both known for their performance, versatility and typical vintage American sound.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it is superior to the two above, but it'll be hard to disappoint you.

I like conical tips for their performance and ease of use.
Give us a review when you try them.

Just got the Stanton 600 and liking it a lot.
I found someone selling Stanton D6003EE aftermarket stylus(1-2 grams tracking).....it sounds very nice.
Why did Stanton discontinue this cartridge?

That's a good question.
This cartridge is indeed, a sort of a "sleeper".
Certainly is capable of great performance.

However, they never gained much popularity.
Maybe because they came after two well-established products by Stanton/Pickering and never managed to find a dedicated crowd.

Plus, they were probable never marketed adequately.
If you look into the history you'll find out that in its heyday, Stanton/Pickering was employing a "barebones"-type of marketing, oriented mostly towards the engineer/professional crowd.

In terms of performance (and sound character), i guess it falls somewhere between the two famous families: the 680 and 500 series.

I have a few styi (NOS) for it. The Pickering DACEIV, DATIV, DAMIV and DAMEIV.
My personal preference among those, is for the DATIV and DACEIV.

I guess the Stanton D6003EE aftermarket stylus, is more similar to my DAMEIV(?).
Strong points for this body-type are a rich sound (similar to the 500 series), combined with an extended top (similar to that of the 680). One could argue it's a "perfect" blend of the two...

Shure had a similar cartridge years ago targeted for the "Broadcast Industry", the Shure SC39 with various stylus options(B,ED,EJ).It too is an outstanding cartridge that is somewhat under the radar.

If it's the stylus sold by "river tone" on eBay, just be aware that it has a spherical diamond, rather than the elliptical diamond that a genuine Stanton EE stylus would have.

I have one of these and although it's a good stylus for the price, it's not in the same league as a real Stanton EE. And mine needs about 2.5g VTF to track properly. The suspension is a bit too firm to track at 2g or less. It does seem to be a good quality stylus overall. It's made in Japan and includes the tension wire in the suspension system.

They do not take 680/681 styli. They do take Pickering XV 15 styli. And Pickering Micro IV/Phase IV styli and Stanton 600 styli. Jico is the best available aftermarket styli for these. The light tracking elliptical offering best, but it will need more tracking force than a Stanton original.

So either Pickering XV-15 OR earlier V-15 stylus work fine in the Stanton 600?
