OK...I admit I'm wanting to do this based on the reference to the movie...I'd like to buy Sumiko's Black Pearl cart...it has, however, a spherical stylus. I'd rather an eliptical. The Pearl has eliptical.
Does the Pearl's stylus fit the Black Pearl?

Who would you have doing the retipping? How would it change the sound? Are you sure you don't want what Sumiko put on there in the first place?

I wouldn't be re-tipping, just replacing with the Pearl stylus...if possible (it's the elliptical...they tend to sound better as they go down a little deeper into the groove...rhr Black Pearl only has a spherical ).
Yeah, I know it would be more cost, but the sphere would be for the lesser records. Spherical tend to be softer in what they pick up, so on a raggier record it's good.

I believe the plastic stylus holders area different shape and do not fit each other.

It will fit.

But, if you are going to purchase a Black Pearl and you want to have an elliptical stylus, why don't you take the Pearl ??? :-k

Yeah, like I said, it was the "Pirates" reference, a nerdy-thing. Plus!...I get a spare stylus to change to without having to reset things when I grab a noisier record, or test a new, used one. Yes, more cost, but eh...life's short enough, right?
It's just checking on the possibility. Thank you all!

There really isn't much of a difference in the Pearl and the black Pearl motor. The only difference is the stylus. Once you put the Pearl stylus on the black Pearl it will look just like the Pearl. I've owned a Pearl and it's a great cart. It doesn't make any sense to get the black Pearl and then replace the Stylus with a Pearl. You should just get the Pearl.

The words 'Pearl' and 'Black Pearl' are printed on the stylus, not on the cartridge. So you will have to be inventive. F.i. buy a Pearl cartridge + stylus. Then find a Black Pearl stylus with a broken tip or something. Pry off the little metal nameplate, and stick it on the Pearl.

(or just write 'black' on the Pearl)

Ay, a man after me-own heart, Japi! (You know I'd do it, too, don't you?) Inventive I can do!
I do appreciate everyone's concerns about spending too much..just had a wild hair up my self...if the Black Pearl had an elliptical stylus, no issue, although I can reserve it for "travelling the stormy seas" (choppier records, as I mentioned before).

The spherical stylus on the Black Pearl is a .5 mil.....I've never heard one of those, but in terms of sound quality, I'd imagine it being as good as a .4 x .7 (if not better) but not quite as good as a .3 x .7.....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Popular Cart. I'd get both stylus'. I am loving spherical tips these days. I'm sure they interchange..as well as the Shelter 201 (not sure if the Shelter is any better than the Pearl though).

I don't see the Shelter 201 at Needle Doctor anymore. Maybe discontinued. It looks exactly like a Pearl but sold for $300+ All of their other models are $1k and up.

I was close to getting one but couldn't get a straight answer if it was any better than the Pearl? It was close to the price of the Denon 103 when I got it.
