Weird popping noise from ProJect Tube Box DS

Postby gr8hamfry » 12 Jan 2018 23:12

Hi,

I have a strange problem with my otherwise excellent ProJect Tube Box DS phono preamp. Every 63 seconds I get a popping/woodpecker kind of noise come through.
I have eliminated the amp, speakers, turntable and cartridge.
The noise is there right from start up and doesn't change despite how long the preamp is on/active. The noise is there whether music is playing or not.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I have also tried all the various combinations of jumpers on the back including subsonic filter and it is always present.
Help
Thanks, Graham

Sounds like you might have a failing valve. Is it in one channel only? Try swapping the valves around, see if it follows. If it's both channels then possibly a failing cap in the power supply side.

Thanks, it seems to be both channels but I will try swapping the valves around. Failing that I'll return it, it's only 2 mths old!

That's actually a safe distance, I think. If it's been there since day one of using the Tube Box, but you have only recently had the noise, the router is probably not it. Of course if you just recently installed the router, and just recently have had the noise,...

Or for grins and giggles, you could shut down the router completely and see if it eliminates the noise.

THIS!

Those tubes love picking up WiFi! My valve phonostage is similarly placed near a router but it keeps it's valves hidden and shielded inside the case :)

Thank you guys! Found the problem, it wasn't the router but closely related, it was a nearby Chromecast. I moved it and problem solved.

Thank you so much, good tonknow there are helpful folks out there :)
