Technics Alignment Gauge

I've gotten the stylus as close as I can to the end of the gauge. It's just a tad bit off. Is this alright? Of course you can't get it perfect.

The stylus tip should hang precisely over the end of the Technics overhang gauge, when looking from the side, like in the picture. What cartridge do you have?

AT440MLb cartridge. I have an Audio Technica ATLP120 and a Pro-ject Debut Carbon DC. I'm having a hard time setting up my cartridge on the Debut Carbon.

You should have plenty of adjustment range. Just take your time and get it as perfect as you can.

Do I have to do any other alignment besides this? Do I need to use a protractor after? My stylus tip seems to be fine with the gauge, but the cantilever isn't straight with the arrow.

The Technics alignment gauge is meant to be used with Technics turntables. It won't work with other turntables, unless the tonearm has the exact same specifications.

I think the ATLP120 does.

The Technics overhang gauge does not accurately align the cartridge on the AT LP120 TT. (I know some do try to use it but the results are not great.) You can use the the Conrad Hoffman protractor found here at VE or the protactor provided by Audio Technica.

I like the downloadable alignment from here on V.E. Never had a lick of trouble getting a wide variety of cartridges to sound accurate. Just be patient with the two nulls. The technics jig is ok, I found I was unsure to trust the eyeball accuracy of it.

The Technics gauge works well with a LP120. A technical guy at AT suggested setting the overhang at 53mm versus 52mm however. So if using the gauge, perhaps extend the stylus tip outward a tiny bit from the 52mm endpoint. Make sure the cartridge is centered in the headshell as well. I also noticed the front edge of the HS1 headshell (included with the 120) is right on 52mm.

Had an AT-1010 (i think it is called) tonearm laying about. Mounted it on a spare Technics sl-2000. This tonearm might be very similar to the one used on the at 120lp or any other hanpin clone.

Using the hoffman protractor (Stephenson - my preference) ended up like this with an EPC-270 with new jico stylus:

Sounds excellent - for a cheap cartridge, that is
Using the standard technics gauge (52mm straight) won't do in my case....

Hmmm that looks a bit odd... Did you measure the spindle to pivot distance?

The SL-2000 is a bit of an odd duck in the Technics line, it has a shorter tonearm (220mm vs. 230mm effective length) and shorter overhang (14mm vs. 15mm) resulting in a spindle to pivot distance of 206mm (vs. 215mm on most Technics models).

But if you put in a different tonearm, those numbers are useless anyway and you'll need to measure the spindle to pivot distance yourself.

Right... sorry about that.

Still, it looks quite extreme, no?
