Cartridge for Rega P2 with RB220

Postby Jorgitoarg » 11 Nov 2017 20:39

Hi,

What cartridge could you recommend for a Rega P2 2017?
I have tried Ortofon 2M Red,Grado Gold and I have had problems with jumps on all the vinyls. (skipping)
Place the Rega Carbon back on the turntable. Can someone recommend a cartridge that is plug and play with the Rega P2 with tonearm RB220 and work properly. Without skipping.

Regards

I can make no recommendations other than to say that cartridges should not "skip" "jump" or otherwise malfunction unless there is something wrong with them or a problem with the arm or with the arm set up or with the records themselves. Silly question but you did reset the tracking weight and bias settings etc when you changed cartridges and not just use the same settings as the original?

You cant adjust the anti-skating on the RB220 arm - it's "automatic".

Yes, James is right, the adjustment is automatic.

I have tried making adjustments and with different cartridge, the result is always the same. Somewhere on some vinyls it jumps, it does not matter if they are new or used.
It only works well with the Rega Carbon.

I have records in my collection that are fine with some cartridges but have given problems with others, sticking or skipping in the same place each time. Perhaps you are having the same difficulty. Is it only certain records that are giving problems and does the skip occur at the same place each time on the records that give problems or are the disturbances of a random nature? Is your turntable perfectly level and mounted on a solid, stable surface? Could it be that the Rega Carbon tracks at a higher VTF which makes it less susceptible to external disturbances, footfall etc? Maybe you need to speak to the dealer that sold you the deck and explain the problem, unless anyone else has any suggestions.
Good luck.

A well setup arm should not skip. If you have doubled checked your set up and everything seems fine it must be the arm. As far as plug and play any of the Rega cartridges would be fine. Something in the setup must not be right.I would take it back to the dealer and have them check out the arm and setup.

Since the Rega Carbon works but you want something better, then maybe consider upgrading the Carbon? It's actually an Audio-Technica AT3600 with a different name om it. It exists several different upgrades to the AT3600, with an elliptical stylus it should be just nice and comparable to the AT95E (similar internals). It also exists even finer styluses to it, I believe a Shibata is the maximum level the AT3600 can be upgraded to.

What about a Rega Bias2 / Elys2 / Exact (depends on your budget) ?

I own a Rega P2 with a RB220 arm & Rega Carbon cartridge too, and I'm a bit interested with an upgrade
I read elsewhere that if your if the height of your cartridge is not the same that the Rega one, it won't work as well (should use a spacer).
