Technics SL-1401 vs Pioneer PL-630

Postby SteveKyleMurphy » 13 May 2017 01:52

Wondering if I could get feedback from someone in the know on these 2 turntables. I currently have the Technics 1401 and am very happy with its performance-I'm running a Denon DL110 with it. I have the opportunity to get a mint condition Pioneer pl630. I want to know where the Pioneer sits performance wise against the Technics that I own.

I have a Pioneer Spec1 and Spec4 amp/preamp setup so I thought it would be nice to go all Pioneer, but not at the expense of performance...at least noticeable audio performance. I realize one is full auto and the other semiauto which doesn't make a difference to me either way. I know the Pioneer can be placed into semiauto if one wants it that way.

I would really appreciate any feedback forum members can provide.

Thanks in advance-

-Steve

I say go for the Pioneer. At the very worst it will be a lateral move. Although not having any hands on experience ( not owning either) my money would be on the Pioneer. I remember always wanting the Pioneer and could not afford it. If you buy the Pioneer what will you do with the Technics? If you can try it in the system that would be the best way to compare.

I like the looks of the Pioneer...If I had the chance to get a mint condition 630 for a fair price, I'd jump at it! :D

So beautiful! 8)

Well I picked up the pl630. It has a Shure M44E cartridge. I don't know anything about this cartridge. Can anyone with experience give me the low down on it? It needs a new stylus for sure (well, it's bent to the side a bit and I know when I try to straighten it it will snap.) Is it better than my low mileage Grado blue or Denon DL110?

I have yet to hook it up and give it a whirl. I do like the fact that the 630 has vta. Decisions, decisions!

Very cool Pioneer, but if you need a place to send the Tech feel free to ask for my address ;).

Well, I will be selling one of these. I need to live with both of them for awhile before I decide.

I once had a PL630. It realy is a fine looking deck. The arm is more
on the heavy side of things and the VTA is a pia to handle. The Dual
721 i had before was way more easier to handle, but certainly looked
not as "sexy" as the Pio.
Anyway, the weak spot of the Pio is the servoelectronics. Its based
on pioneer chips. As it happens in my deck the pll-chip got fried
because of a aging capacitor failure and rendered the machine dead.
Needless to say that no spareparts are avail, unless slaughtering another
Pio deck with the same chip.
Also the tonearm is moved by a separat motor and it can happen with
a LOMC installed that moving the arm induces hum.
Anyway,me thinks the Technics is qualitywise on the same level, just
has not the same hifi-gloria factor.

I've owned both of these, the Pioneer was a step up in pretty much every way. It's the table that made me understand what reviewers meant when they talked about "tempo". There is a quality to its stability that is hard to explain.

The down side to it is that they can be a pain with all the switches and buttons that need to stay clean for it to function properly. Everything seems to be tied into the speed circuit. Mine would still be my every day table had it been more reliable. If you got one that was stored properly and has been serviced, it's a killer table.

The Shure M44 is a solid cartridge, but the 630 deserves better IMO. I ran a bunch of different carts on mine over the years, I'd stay away from real high compliance ones, but anything else did fine.
