Hi!
I am about to make a set of balanced cables from the tonearm. Tonearm has a Din-connector so cable wil have a din on the tonearm side and xlr`s on the preamp side. I am not shure about what to do with the cable`s screen. Is it best to let it "float" on the Din side and connect it to pin 1 on the xlr side? Or connect screen in both ends together with arms ground?
Thanks for advice`s !
Cheers
Aron

I'm interested to know as well, though I think connecting the screen to only the XLR side would provide some extra shielding from RF and EMF. I imagine connecting screen to both XLR and DIN side will cause grounding problems/loop if the ground post is used as well.

Hi!
Having googled a lot about this i find different ways to do it. The connection i am considering is leaving the shield open at the «Din» end and connect it to pin 1 on the xlr and run a separate groundwire from tonearm to ground-post on preamplifier.

Re: Balanced wiring from Din
Hi, an interesting question. On a typical RCA or other set of connectors the usual guidance is to have the shield on the origin end. Many of the more costly cables are marked that way. In your case I believe I would try that first particularly if the turntable has its own ground. That I would attach to the preamp ground terminal. Possibly a direct connection between the TT ground and Din ground as well. At the same time beware of a possible ground loop through the TT power supply. Some TT have three wire power systems and have a direct ground through the power line. Others have a capacitor (and possibly other components) between the chassis and neutral of the power line. It is difficult to generalize what will work best to avoid ground loops. Please let us know what ends up being the best.

Hi
After reading the phonostage`s user manual(Aqvox) i found a wiring diagram for "Symetrical cartridge connection" that say shield open in the source end(cartridge) and shield connected to xlr connector. http://www.aqvox.de/download/PHONO2CI_manual_en.pdf
I will try that first. Ok, good to know where to start :-)
Din connectors are ordered and on it`s way.
Will report back when i am done.
Cheers

Comparison between balanced and unbalanced termination using a fully-balanced front end with a mounted cartridge as source. Both channels are wired shielded twisted pair. The Left channel (blue) was unbalanced using a jumper to eliminate (for illustration) the benefits of common mode rejection and fully-balanced balanced wiring. Coaxial connections using RCA connections would look similar to the blue trace.
