suggestions for upgrade

Postby cdearing » 11 Jan 2017 17:21

Hey there! New to the forum, love the site. Definitely a Newby. Started out with a technics SL BD-20 which has served me well but having a few probs now. Looking to upgrade to another vintage TT. Open to suggestions on make/model. Started doing some research but overwhelmed by all the choices from 70s and early 80s! Budget under 300 if possible. Thanks in advance for the help!

If you see this soon, the cartridge sells for almost the asking price. The player is well thought of and people in the Dual forum will gladly help with any problems you have with it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-1229-Turnt ... SwiDFYNu0x .

I think he's asking advices for a ready for action turntable on a budget. In that regard I'd be cautious about this one Dual TT since the motor is not running and it needs a new stylus and then maybe more...

Yes thanks, prefer a unit ready to roll unless something simple like belt or cartridge. I see a Pioneer PL -514 on ebay that's serviced and looks clean...would that be an upgrade from my SL BD-20? Thanks again for the input!

Yep - and the Stylus (not OEM replacement) will cost you $135 on its own

The PL-71 is a nice middle of the road table, how much?

A little pricey but not too bad. It looks like it needs to be re-veneered and I'll bet the electronics haven't been touched. I payed about the same for my Sansui SR-717's. Their top of the line direct drive from 1974-76. I just finished re-veneering them and rebuilding the electronics, I also rewired the arms with litz wire. I use a Shure V-15 TYPE IV on one and a Shure M-95 on another.

If you re-veneer and rebuild the electronics you should be happy for years to come with it.

Thanks for the feedback. Im sure you're right about the electronics not being touched. I dont know enough at this point to tackle a rebuild. Maybe the better option for me right now is get a good dependable new (or newer) TT like a AT LP120....then continue to learn from this site before taking on something like this. You may have just saved me a good chunk of change in the long run. I appreciate the feedback.

If you're considering a new TT I suggest you give U-Turn TT's a look.

With those/some tweaks it sounds believable that the U-T could be a proper deal at that price.
