...Today I was given another freebie. A Thorens Td-125 with SME 3009... after cleaning all the potentiometers out. Music sounds great using my own AT95e in a wooden body. About 8 hours fiddling on this. Need to get some replacement nuts and washers to adjust the sprung top to correct level.
SME 3009 S II pre-improved apparently ! Nice one. It does take some fiddling to understand it's build, balance and potential. But once acquired it all becomes evident and adjusting and trouble shooting any eventual issue more evident. So a necessary step before endless hours of worry less listening pleasure.

Absolutely filthy when I got it. Took me a while to figure out how to adjust the arm so that counterweight clears the lift.

Came with a filthy but perfect smoked acrylic cover and a Goldring 1022GX and original Shure headshell missing the finger life all rattling around in plastic box with various other bits and pieces. The cartridge needs a new stylus, apparently :-)
What is that with the counterweight and the "lift" ? Could you elaborate some please as I do not get your point there ?

Thanks for letting me know what SME I've got. By lift, I mean the tonearm lift lever that raises and lowers the tonearm on the record. As received using it would collide when lifting the record up during play. It would collide/interfere with what the SME manual calls the "rider weight" (see below)

Your screen shot schemes are that of the rider weight of a SME 3009 'Improved' that is fixed onto the resin "spider" into which the counterweight is screwed in.

The SME 3009 pre-improved has a wand/tube stub onto which the counter weight is slided and the rider weights is fixed into it's rear end.

But indeed, you can un-tight the lift dash-pot assembly to turn it some. Now your rider weight seem to be "low" when it's best set horizontal or close.

Still it needs to be set properly for an even or close (again) in balance rest of the knife edge bearings horizontally that I adjust by the feel of it tangling or not.

With no "fancy" dials on those SME's, the setting for VTF should be done with a scale or a gauge, AS I check with Audacity and the ears and VTA & azimuth visually !

Zilch. Nada. Null. Nothing!
Friends father passed and he gave me his pops DUAL CS-505-1 TT. Bought new in '81 or '82 he thinks? I know how to put vinyl on a tt and cue up, my expertise ends there. It is belt-drive 2 speed and the cartridge is Nagaoka MP-11. It all seems ok however I dont have speakers hooked up (no cables) Now if I only had some vinyl to play on it! It came with a tuner/amp Sony STR-242L & a pair of Goodmans RB20 speakers. that's all folks! :)

The several turntables/changers that I have were plunked down on my repair shop's counter with the donator saying "if you can fix 'em, you can have 'em."
So.... I paid zilch, for a Dual and a Kenwood, among others.
I did sell a pristine DP-59L with a Soundsmith Grace F9 - Ruby cartridge, (also gotten free) - I didn't want the hassle of that type of turntable - too much electronics going on.
I like simplicity, durability, I want to enjoy my records, not fuss over modifications, enhancements, worry about future issues.
All that mod stuff is for others to feel free to deal with, good luck to them.

Bought in Hawaii in about 1983 by my brother with the matching Amp sadly that's long gone.
Do not remember the cost now.

Upgraded the needle/stylus to a Shure V15 III in July 1976 for $53.

I just picked up a Garrard AT60 for $45. One owner and other than nicotine stains and dirt, looks pretty good. Needs feet and a stacker spindle. It’s my first foray into restoring. Always loved giving old items new life.
