Not as sweet as the Transfiguration, but more detailed and eventful

What cartridge on your Ariston/Linn

Post by Jimbuy » 01 Jul 2016 17:45

I was surprised to see the original topic locked. I'm a bit new and don't know the details of locking.

Anyway, Let's "unlock" it. I also use a Shure on my LVX. An Ultra VST III with various styli including the SAS.
I was wondering if anyone was playing around with capacitance on their Shures. Your experience and observations would be appreciated.

I am using an Ortofon VMS20e on an SME 3009 S2 improved. It's a wonderful pairing, which plays beautifully in my room.

I've never heard of a 95Xe. Can't find much on the web, either, not even on the A-T North America web site. Where are you and what can you tell us about it, Jackie?

It is a new AT cartridge, liked by HiFi Choice magazine, the stylus parts fit the original AT95 body but it is smoother with more detail. Anybody interested should search this forum for AT94ex. It is ex and not xe as I posted originally.

Still no luck finding a 95ex; but I did find a 95HE on Turntableneedles.com with a JICO hypereliptical for $140:

I have just done a Google search and there it is, no problem. It is a LOT cheaper than the Jico version

Yes; but all the prices are in pounds (no L symbol on my USA keyboard) and all the websites start with "eu."

I found a spare headshell for my LVX on eBay and have thought about doing some cartridge rolling. My Shure Ultra lets me switch out styli easily; but I thought I'd like to try a totally different "house" sound. Here's a quote from the old thread on AT95s:

"that At95e is a very good choice. I owned Linn mm cartridges which were based on the AT95e. I used them on my Axis and LP12. In fact the AT95 variants made for LP Gear in the US are much better sounding than the stock cartridge AT cartridge and offer up the excitement of the Linn versions due to the better cantilever. The yellow bodied AT95ce is a dead ringer for the Linn Basik and sounds as dynamic but a bit more refined up top. The green bodied AT95se sounds like the Linn K5, but again a bit more refined. Either of these cartridges are dirt cheap. $40 to $60. Like many Linn users on a budget in the 1990s, after two K5s, I bought a Sumiko Blue Point.

These days I think the little known Linn Adikt is incredibly good value."

A quick look at the LP gear offerings shows a range from $40 for the standard AT95e to $150 for the SA with a Shibata stylus. I'd think the $60 AT95SE would be the sweet spot, although there are no reviews. Has anyone tried one on a Basik/LVX?

I'm running with a Grado Presige Red. My Ariston Audio Rd11s has a Linn Basik LVX tone arm.

Thinking about a Ortofon 2M Blue just not sure if it will allow for the correct over hang.

Interesting to see my original thread 'locked' as I can't see any confrontational upsets or juicy material being posted.

Ho hum. No longer own a Linn, but recently I do have a lovely re-tipped Supex 900 (Expert Stylus) which would have been very deserving on the Ittok.
