What Turntable do you use?

Postby JaS » 07 Oct 2002 12:31

I thought it might be interesting to hear what others are running? At the moment pride of place in my living room goes to my Technics SP10mkII motor unit in an SH-10B3 plinth with Dynavector DV505 tonearm and Goldring 1042 cartridge.

I'm currently using a partly modified VPI HW-19 MkIII with a modified (new counterweight and VDH wiring) Rega RB-300. I mostly use an Ortofon MC30 Super MkII (I also have an Ortofon MC30, an MC20 Super MkII and a Denon DL-103).

For 78:s I have an old Lenco L-75.

This is used with an Ortofon t-20 Mk I, a variety of preamps (I can't seem to find the ONE preamp to use), two bridged Luxman M-03 amps and a pair of ProAC 2.5 clones.

I Currently have a Technics SP-15 with a SL-1200 Arm grafted on. Soon to be replaced with  a Technics EPA-B500 arm. I hope to own a VPI TNT series turntable with a Graham 1.5 arm, or a Simon York Table Some day. Overkill

I've been using the Same Empire 208 (circa 1962) since about 1972. I installed a SME 3009S2 Improved shortly after I got it. Pickup for seroius work is an Audio Technia AT15S. Everyday pickup is a Stanton 680EE. (I have a bunch of spare stylii!) Other pickups are a Shure V15 Type 2 and for 78's a Shure M44 with a 3 mil stylus. I expect an old Dennon direct drive to arrive shortly. And in the groove yard (not in everyday service): Pioneer KD 2100 Gates CB77 with SME 3009S2 Improved (2 each) Garrad SL95B (1969) Garrad Type A (early 1960's ?) A couple that I forgot: A second Empire 208 complete with original arm and pickup. A 1911 Victrola solid oak upright console. Varispeed near 78. Works. Acoustic with internal horm. Such heavy tracking force that I never put a record of any value on it!!

I have a Technics SL-D2 with Ortofon FF15XE MkII, a Dual 1225 with Grado Black, A Marantz 6100 with an Empire something or other, and an MCS that is actually a Technics SL-23 with slight modifications which is currently in need of a cartridge. None of these are exactly high end tables, but with some work I have managed to get good sound out of all of them.  I enjoy picking up old turntables and working on them. I can take them to my local used record store and sell them or trade them for vinyl. :D

Currently have two tables in the loop. The workhorse  is my AR with a Rega RB 300. Got the rega new in london in 1989. The AR I got used about five years before that. Originally used my Grace G707. The Grace had transported from an ERA, which was bought with the Grace in college (a long time ago). The "other" table is a Denon fully manual I got off Ebay recently for $90. It came with an Ortophon something, but I haad bought the deck strictly for use with CD 4 quadradiscs, so my old Shure M24H is installed in that. Got that cartridge in HIGH SCHOOL! Did get a new stylus, at least. Needless to say I prefer the AR for most things as its a belt driver, and has a Linn cartridge. BTW, the Linn/Rega?AR setup is used for Quad too, just not CD 4s. So there. Marc

Current Deck is a Linn  Sondek LP12/Valhalla/Basik LVX/ Ortofon 520 MkII or Nagaoka MP30 or Goldring 1012GX ( i do like removable headshells  :D) I also have a Systemdek 920/II with RB250 arm. This is a spare deck I bought it on impulse and don't know what to do with now. (The running gear looks identical to a Rega P3) The Linn is 'in use' :), the Systemdek is in a box  :-/ Prior to getting the Linn I have used a Systemdek IIX, Systemdek 920/II, Pro-Ject 0.5 & 1.2, and finally Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference/SME 3009/Shure v15 Mk 2 Imp. I have also owned a few plasticy lo-fi midi system type decks, none worthy of note. The decks feed into a Rotel Phono amp a NAD 317 Pre amp stage and a NAD 317 & 214 mono Power amp stages. Speakers are a little known Danish make by the name of System Audio. The TT sits on my DIY, light, rigid, welded , wallshelf. The rest of the gear is on Atacama Racks and stands. and looks a bit like this : Image PS I really like the look of the Dynavector Tonearm.

actually, i'm using two TT - a planar 3/RB300 and elys (and yes, because of the elys, the sound iss not that good) - bought new - LP12 with an fidelity research FR-12 and a Grado silver. This is an old lp12 (basic (crappy) alimentation) and i'm actually finising my DIY armageddon (i redo completly the suspension - new springs kit bought 3.5 euro to an official linn dealer) - I bought the LP-12 something like 30 euros in a garage sale - uh uh uh !! In my attic, there is : - an old beogram 4000 (don't know what to do with) - a thorens 145MkII (I may be sell the P3 and use this TT in a second system) In the past, a long time ago, when I was broke, i used a old dual TT (can remember the type, may be a 1245) and an old hitachi TT with a broken antiskate mecanism !!!) My first TT was an cheap Technics SL10(?) with tangential arm. I modded the case with lead and rubber and putted in Ortofon OMP 30. It sounded better without the acrylic dust cover. My next was a NAD 5120 http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/marrfield/216/pag_eng/n5120g.htm with ortofon X5-MC. It sounded nice but far from perfect so I moved to :) Micro Seiki DDX 1500, with original tonearm and ortofon mc 20 super II. I also had an Rega RB300 tonearm but it was broken  :'( during transport. Now am looking for new arm like RB 600 or others. If you have any suggestion, I would be pleased.  :-/

I have several turntables: 1. The "everyday-system" is containing a Garrard 301 on a heavy homemade plinth (10cm plywood) with Koshin GST-801/Denon DL-103 and Rabco SL-8E/Highphonic system. 2. The "sunday-system" has a Goldmund Studietto with T5 arm and Audio Note Io System. 3. In the house are also: Thorens TD160S/Morch UP4/Grado TLZ Sony TTS-3000, Sony PUA-1600L with different systems Dual 704 and Dual 1219 Regards BFF

Three turntables for every use: - In the living a Sony PSX800 (a oldie but goodie from the 80's) with a tangentular arm and ATOC9 - In the study a Thorens TD160 with a SME series III, ATOC9. The turntable is completely tuned by myself. New plint, dampened sub chassis and last but not least a Linn Valhalla power supply separate from the turntable (great improvement) - In my hobby room a Thorens TD125 also with a new and sturdy plint, SME series III and a Dynavector
