SL220 - New stylus needed or New arm??

Post by lvredrider » 26 Jan 2020 16:40

I picked up a Technics SL220 on the cheap (free :D ) but it has some issues. I've attached some photos to help explain. I'm new to this and not sure if I need just a stylus or a new arm ( the head shell appears okay) or both?
Those wires dangling there, not sure what that is but doesn't look good. Thanks for any help

Looks like the stylus has been pulled off and broken. You should be abe to take the cartridge tags out of the plastic bit that is hanging from the wires. Then you can get a new cartridge of your choosing.

It appears that you have a p-mount adapter on a serviceable standard head shell. To mount a standard 1/2 inch mount cartridge remove the hardware bolted to the head shell and (carefully) remove the coloured wires from the hanging piece. Test functionality of TT before purchasing cartridge etc.

Hi Ivredrider, that is not a p-mount adapter that is a mounting bracket for either and old empire cartridge or and old Shure cartridge. The piece attached to the head shell wires is the back of the cartridge. Using a pair of pliers grasp the broken piece firmly and then use a needle nose pliers to gently remove the wires from the back of the broken piece. You can throw that broken piece away it's no good now. The mounting bracket can be removed from the head shell and used on another empire/shure cartridge if you come across one that needs it. A new cartridge can just be mounted right to the head shell when you get one. I hope this helps.

thanks guys, you all are very helpful. musicmn, I saw the, wires, color coded no less, you are referring to and pulled them off the busted piece. I guess I could've been more investigative, still learning these things. I'll order a new stylus and hopefully all is good!

You don't need a new stylus, You need a new cartridge. The stylus is part of the cartridge, and will be included with your new cartridge.
