Best intermediate TT upgrade

Post by conoroconnell » 26 Jan 2020 14:12

Hi all,
I have an Audio Technica LP3 turntable which has served me very well since Ive bought it...not looking to upgrade in the immediate future but just wondering what would be the best turntable in the €250-400 range ($300-$500 approx.)? I think used is out unfortunately because I live in Ireland which doesn't really have a great market for used turntables, and I'm not aware of any dealer who sells used.
Many thanks, Conor :D

That is going to be a hard battle I think...
The AT LP3 has a build in phono stage, comes with a cartridge...
I would not know what would be a true upgrade at that budget you indicate, assuming you again will look for a build in phono stage and pre assembled cartridge...

If you would considerer the phono stage and cartridge to be separate, you will not come near a upgrade unless you are willing to spent more...

The AT LP3 comes with an AT91R cartridge, with a conical/spkerical stylus.
You can upgrade to an elliptical stylus for a modest outlay.

Cheers,
Alec

Hi Alec. Yes upgraded to an AT VM 95 E shortly after I purchased it.

I don't know AT-LP3, but I've heard AT-LP5 several times with different carteidges in two different setups (nothing very expensive), and I always liked the overall result, so I guess it's a good TT for the price.
if the LP3 is more or less same quality of LP5, I'd let it in its place and go for a better phonostage (you may try, for example, a Clearaudio Nano). in time you could go for a better cartridge too, e.g. an AT 440MLB / VM540 or, if you have a MC phono stage, AT-F7 -this one is really awesome, bang for the bucks, stellar q/p.

according to this "strategy" you would spend something less than double the money you planned, but you could do it in two separate steps, and I guess it may give you better results (since the first step already) than a new TT with built in phonostage in that budget.
