New member introduction and why I'm here

Post by johnbhm » 25 Jan 2020 16:47

My son set up a Dual turntable for a friend of our's and after telling him about the Bang & Olufsen Rx2 that I had many years ago he got hooked and dragged me in with him. These three showed up this week.

The B&O Tx2 was packed extremely well and was locked down but they didn't remove the platter which in turn broke the tip off the cartridge and the dust cover for the tone arm. On first test the motor had a scratching sound but everything else seemed to operate fine. I removed and disassembled the motor and found that there was a plastic piece that held what I would guess is a flywheel? After a couple well placed drops of superglue and a lube reassembled and all is quite. I wet sanded and buffed the dust cover deep cleaned and put it all together and everything seems to run smoothly. Now the hunt for a cartridge. Total cost was $22.50 shipped.

The AIWA was $20.00 shipped and came in it's original box with all its original paperwork including a warranty cold soldier repair receipt and the European power adapter. It also was packed with all its original shipping supports in place. This one is on my bench waiting for new belts and a good cleaning to remove what was left of the old ones. From looking at the paperwork it looks like it was not touched since its last service in 1995 when it was stated it needed new belts.

The Technics was the most expensive at $40.00 shipped but works great. The only issue was that it had the wrong platter cover and didn't have cutouts for record size switches which I have fixed. We need to get a better needle and a correct ground plug but I found an old power supply plug that is not as tight as I would like but for testing works well.

The goal is to get all three functioning and as I get farther along I'm sure I will need some help so thank's in advance,John

I forgot to mention the video link to the Tx2 operating. I'm thinking it may be because of no cartridge but the drops to the right when it lowers. Does anyone know if that seems OK or not. I'm still going to have my son locate a good cartridge. Thanks again, John.

You seem to be quite the technician which is a huge advantage when buying vintage turntables.

Good luck. I think B and O turntables use proprietary cartridges. Check the links below.

Isopropyl alcohol is good for removing old belt goo.

Cheers,
Alec

Welcome. That Technics is a nice 'little turntable' with a good stylus it can surprise. I am (obv's) a fan of linear trackers so look forward to your experience with yours once it is fully up and running.

B and O cartridges and styli can be expensive because they are not common.....so maybe you should look into a re-tip? :D

Thank's for the replies everyone. And I am excited to get one or both of these linear trackers running. I've got the AIWA opened up on the bench to be cleaned. Thanks for the alcohol tip Alec, hopefully belts will be here in a day or so and I get it cleaned and back together. Thank's again, John.

Belts came for the AIWA today so finished cleaning, lubing and installing belts. I have to say it was a great feeling when it worked perfectly. It's fascinating how you can skip or choose the songs. After seeing it was functioning well I took the time to mask off the graphics wet sand and buff the dust cover as you could barely see through it.
