AR ES-1 mount Jelco 250 ST

Post by padraig » 14 Dec 2019 22:16

I traded my Dual 1229 for my friend's AR ES-1 but although the tonearm he had is branded "AR" it does not mount on the table. The RCA plugs have a PIN connection for the tonearm but the Jelco tonearm has very thin exposed wires.

I snapped a couple of photographs and hopefully these are attached. I plan to use my Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge for this setup which would just be an original configuration.

Does anyone have ideas how this Jelco 250ST tonearm mounts to the deck? posting.php?mode=post&f=18#

Thanks but I am not sure how this data helps.

It seems that the AR ES-1 has a mounting area that does not allow the AR-branded Jelco 250ST tonearm to be attached to the turntable. Is there a missing part? or is this a Ford engine branded Chevrolet going into a Honda?

The usual arrangement is an armboard on the turntable, to which an arm mount is attached. This mount accepts the pillar of the arm.
Jelco mounts are usually shaped like a hat, a disc with a central cylinder _H_
You might be missing that.
Pictures would help.

Cheers,
Alec

Thanks again for the assistance!

I have attached more photographs that hopefully illustrate the situation. By my calculations the three bolt pattern on the Jelco tonearm has a diameter of 37mm while the turntable mounting plate has a three bolt pattern diameter of 47.3 mm.

So you make new holes in the armboard.
Actually, i think I am looking at a Jelco mount on the armboard, as well as one on the arm.
There should be a set-screw in the side of each, to hold the pillar of the arm at the correct height. You probably can loosen the one on the arm, slide the pillar out, and slide it into the one on the armboard.
OTOH I think someone switched arms. Most, but not all, arms made by Jelco had a socket in the bottom, to accept that plug on the end of the cable, and yours does not.
You have a choice: atttach a socket to the arm wires, or attach RCA interconnects directly to them, with or without an RCA connection.

Cheers,
Alec

I would like to see more pictures of the arm. I'm not sure that it is a Jelco.

It seems to simple....

I removed the set screws on the "collar" attached to the tonearm and although the ID of the mounting plate is not quite equal to the OD of the tonearm shaft it did get relatively tight when I tightened the set screw on the mounting plate.

How can I find a "socket" to attach the bare wires from the tonearm? That seems the simplest as that wire configuration appears more efficient.

Poor quality tonearm photos are below.

This arm was the standard arm fitted to the lower specification AR EB101 turntable and I'm not sure anyone has ever convincingly stated who made it, but it is not a Jelco.

The library on this very site states the arm has an effective length of 229mm and a pivot-to-spindle distance of 213mm, compared to 228/210mm for the Jelco. As the ES-1 will have been designed for the Jelco (which has a standard Linn mount), the EB101 arm will not fit without some modification.

Thanks! This Jelco arm fits perfectly on my AR ES-1 since I removed the other "collar"!
