Recommended cartridge for this turntable

Post by markek » 11 Dec 2019 00:20

Just picked this Pioneer PL-255 Turntable. The On button sticks a little but other than that it seems to work and play ok. I Read that its a decent starter turntable.

I do not know anything about the cartridges and what make one better than another. Is this a good cartridge? Should I look at replacing it with something else?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

That should be decent cartridge, if the stylus is not too worn.
The manuals for your turntable are in the VE library. https://www.vinylengine.com/library/pio ... -255.shtml

Thanks Alec. Couldn't find really any info on the cartridge, that and the fact this is the first turntable I've had in I can't remember how many years. Trying to figure out all this cartridge, stylus, calibration, etc. etc.

Picked this turntable up for $50. Works and is in so so shape. Need a good cleaning.

Starter turntable to learn on I think.

Are there other cartridges that would make it sound significantly better based on the fact I only paid $50 for it?

Nagaoka MP 110 Excellent for the price. about 2X the turntable cost. $100 It may be more than you want to spend. Not sure.

Staying cheap, you could get an AT3600 cart. It will sound fine.

Or you could try the AT-VM95C (conical stylus) for $34, or the AT-VM95E (elliptical) stylus for $49.
