At this point you may as well wait for it to arrive. You are covered for a refund, and if it is packed well there should not be a problem. When it does get there, take pictures of the box before opening and as you opened it.

Well, the Realistic LAB440 arrived today, and it's destroyed. When I grabbed the turntable off the porch and heard it moving inside the box, I knew I was in trouble.

Here is a picture tour of the atrocity.

First, here is what the box looked like:

A bad sign right there.

Then I found plastic pieces loose in the box

And then when I finally unpacked it, I saw this:

The platter came off the turntable and went to town on the inside of the unit

The counterweight was still on the tone arm.

The tone arm rest completely snapped off:

the hinges on the lid won't stay open, it just slams down: https://i.imgur.com/kAWvZ1c.mp4

The queueing lever will not raise of lower the tone arm. It's permanently stuck in the up position.

I sent the seller a message with 10 photos attached.

And the seller just issued me a refund, but hasn't said if they want the turntable back.

Somehow I think not. The return trip would only serve to damage it more.

It's too bad it arrived like that but the platters on these direct drives really should be removed for shipping. The box also looks rather flimsy.

I think you could probably rescue it with a bit of TLC but it won't be as good as it should have been if not damaged.

I don't think the tone arm was even locked down. The tone arm rest was locked shut. If the tone arm was locked in it, it would have still been attached to the tone arm.

The seller would have indicated this as the refund would be when it came back. It is up to the seller to send you a label as well. Check the resolution center to confirm that the refund is closed and if it is, no return.

Good on the seller to step up right away, and your email about packing ahead of time would be a heads up.

This is what eBay shows me:

I assume that means I got my refund and the matter is closed.

Looks that way.

Big cost to "free shipping". I am always suspicious of free shipping with a fairly low bulky cost item. Even it is only 10 miles away, the shipping would have been a good buck or two, less the 15% in Ebay/paypal fees, they went el cheapo.

So, there's a seller in Brooklyn that has a LAB440 for $120, but it doesn't have a headshell. Conveniently, I now have a headshell.

Cosmetically, I LOVE the look of this turntable.

I'm glutton for punishment. I found another one on eBay. I was the only bidder at $79 + $20 shipping. I'd like to give the seller the best possible packing instructions to avoid the destruction of this turntable. If anyone could provide packing instructions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry about that first one. The time to ask sellers about packing instructions is before you actually bid. There's really no way $20 is enough to cover proper packing and shipping. I've tried before to get sellers to follow packing instructions after the fact, and keep the same cost, but it rarely works. You should probably offer to pay them a little more for shipping now, with the understanding they will follow your instructions.

I shipped a Realistic STA-2600 receiver for less than $20 and it’s way heavier than a turntable.

I hear ya, but it's not just about weight. Receivers are uniform in size, with no loose bits or large detachable parts. I'm talking about packing materials, and not just actual shipping cost. Extra padding, probably double-boxing, separate compartment for the platter, etc. There is actually an art to it.

The first question I always ask a seller is, "Do you have experience shipping turntables?"

I would still appreciate packing instructions. Even a link to a site would be appreciated.

Once I get to a keyboard (instead of a smartphone), I'd be happy to oblige. You might also do a search here on VE since the topic has been discussed many times before.
