Goodwill Find - Thorens TD115 ($20)

Post by nl393a » 08 Sep 2019 17:18

Hi all,

Yesterday (09/08/2019) I found a Thorens TD115 at a local Goodwill store. Plugged it in at the store and everything seems to work fine. I paid $19.91 (plus tax) for it and took it home with me.

The turntable came with a Grace Ruby cartridge and stylus. After some extensive reading of the manuals, I removed the turntable plinth and lubed it a little (3 drops, to be exact). Re-balanced the tonearm (I had to go to v-engine to read the manuals as I have never owned a Thorens before).

The automatic function really baffles me, as, after playing the record, the tonearm just lifts up and stays there instead of returning to the tonearm rest (although the plinth stops spinning). My question to the Thorens owners out there - is this normal, or should the tonearm return to the tonearm rest after playing?

Thanks in advance.

David

IIRC, your TD115 has the auto-lift and stop feature at the end of record, where the TD105 also has auto return, so it sounds as if your 115 is working like it's supposed to.

Looks like you got one heck of a deal from Goodwill. Be appreciative

Cheers,
Al

Good deal? Good Will? That does not compute.

Quite a score. In good nick it would have been a bargain at twice the price. Be grateful the folks at Goodwill don't know the difference between Thorens and Crosley.

As always, just my opinion, YMMV.

Our local Goodwill rarely has any electronics that I would consider buying, but last year I came across a Pioneer TX-6800 AM/FM tuner in almost mint condition for $9. There was no way to test it other than plugging it in, but it did light up so I decided to bring it home with me.

It works just fine. Due to the lack of decent radio stations around here I never desired a component tuner, but for nine bucks what the heck. I've been in and out of the local Goodwill over the years (my wife is a thrift store fan) but this was the first time that I'd ever seen something that I'd even considered mid-fi.

I still continue to check their shelves with crossed fingers, but there's been nothing decent there for a long time.

Cheers,
Al

The turntable is a great find but with that cartridge and stylus, in what sounds to be good shape, that is a really incredible find. Congrats.

Make sure you add your find (and maybe a pic) to our other thread here...I think it fits the bill!

A big THANK YOU to everyone! Looks like I scored a pretty good find! Good to know that the tonearm is acting as it should. When I think about it, the last turntable that I bought new was a Dual CS1257 back in the 80s. Since then I don't think I paid more than $20 for a turntable!

Yesterday I gave the turntable a listen to, it sounded pretty nice, perhaps a little more detailed than my antique Pickering TL3 (Gold) on a Realistic Lab-395. I believe, however, my Pickering sounds more dynamic :D .

Again, thank you everyone for the information. Happy listening!

Well if you're not happy with that Grace Ruby someone might be willing to take it off your hands for you.

Just kidding (kind of).

I lucked into a TD115 for $25 about six years ago, without a cartridge.
Nice TT, and the Grace is definitely worth getting re-tipped.
Both the Pickering P-mount and the Grace should be a nice match with that arm.

From what I can tell, it sounds like an underrated gem in the turntable world...Maybe we need a thread now about "underrated turntables" that can still "punch above their weight" and yet can be found or had cheaply in an age of rising vintage audio prices...Then again, I wouldn't want the prices to start going up on these sorts of things... :-$

It's a pretty good 'table compared to others from the era. I just fixed one up that I payed €50 for some years ago. That said, I really don't like it. That auto mechanism was a pita to find out and adjust. If you don't get it right the platter just keeps spinning. There's no off switch. The hinges for the dustcover, another pita. Arm adjustment same, and only ultra light arm (most carts like heavier arm). But when it works it works OK. No magic but a decent 'table to start with.

The Td115 is the little brother of the TD125 and a realy good TT.
I use a Shure M95He that was original mounted.
Get the right oil and a new Belt. ;)
