AKAI AP-M70 Spindel

Post by fhff » 14 Aug 2019 19:59

Hi all,

I am trying to bring a 90´s turntable back into life. It´s an Akai AP-M70, from a entry level 90´s HiFi system.
I opened it up and realized the belt was broken. A new one is arriving shortly. The motor is running. I´ve cleaned it up and will relube soon.
I noticed that the center spindel is not rotating. My doubt is if it´s supposed to rotate? I attach some photos.
Thank you very much. i´m quite new to the restoration of turntables.

It should turn. See if heating it with a hair dryer makes it less recalcitrant.

Some of these cheaper turntables have a stagnant spindle, and the platter revolves around it. Crosleys being one example. Probably a plastic platter.

Yes. It´s a plastic platter. Belt drive.
I ask because it doesn´t look as it was intended to spin. But I´m not sure. You can see in the photos a kind of white rubber/teflon that appears to keep it from moving.
This is the underside of the platter:

That looks like a fixed spindle designed to work as an inverted bearing.

Thank you @Copperhead. The spindle goes through the inside of the golden tube in the center of the platter. The bearing, as far as I know, is to engage the auto-return mechanism.
I will not force the spindle and try the turntable when I get the new belt.
