Which turntables should I keep?

Post by Cigarrocker » 12 Aug 2019 16:10

My main turntable for years has been a Yamaha P20 and it's been working flawlessly. Great sound and I've really enjoyed it. I recently bought a Kenwood KD-3100 for $30 as a backup and to help lighten the workload of the Yamaha and I really do love the sound from that one as well.

2 weeks ago I came across a Technics SL-Q2 with dust cover, etc. for free that someone was giving away. Absolutely love it and in my opinion it's better all around than the Yamaha or the Kenwood. Now here is the question. I don't have room for 3 turntables. If you had this "problem" which ones would you keep? Fully keep in mind that the Technics is staying put so I have to part with the either the Yamaha or the Kenwood. Although I do really love the Yamaha and appreciate the fact that it's fully auto, I want to say that I like the Kenwood a little better. Any opinions, ideas, specs, history, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd get rid of the Kenny.

Which one would you regret selling the most?

If fully auto, your Yamaha could be missed at some time. That ability is too damn convenient.

Last winter a Kenwood 3100 came into my hands cheaply. It had speed issues but after correcting, it went to a friends step daughter and her husband.

It did not operate like other semi-autos. I actually found it a bit puzzling, confusing actually. When I thought I had it figured, I wrote the steps down for the new owner’s benefit.

I recall not finding an online manual in English.

Care to elaborate on why? I have a 4100 I like very much, and the 3100 is only one step down.

You're right...I have yet to find a manual online that's in english for the KD-3100. That being said, can't find one at all for the P 20, lol

It is a sad advice, but comes from real life experience. If you like the Technics sell the others and never look back. And enjoy the notion that you got a TT with no money.
If you absolutely must keep one more then I would do Yamaha. Partly for the looks and for strait and light arm. Just to have multiple options.

Quick update...ended up going with the Yamaha as my secondary unit over the Kenwood because it's full auto and In my opinion sounded slightly better. Thanks to those who responded.

Mine moved on. The Pioneer PL 518 semi-auto I had, stayed. I bought and restored a Technics SL-1500 as main turntable, the Pioneer is my living room casual player.

Your SL-Q2 is worth keeping as your main turntable. It's that good, and automatic return.

correct number of turntable you should own is n+1

This also holds true for motorcycles, Volvo RWD estates, and bottles of malt liquor.
