Project 9 tonearm VTA adjustment?!

Post by Ksutt » 11 Jul 2019 20:37

Hey there,
I have a Music Hall MMF5.1-se turntable with its stock Pro-Ject tonearm. Just got a new cartridge and have to adjust the VTA to accommodate. After scouring online boards (and downloading all of the MH & Pro-Ject manuals) I've found that it is the discontinued Pro-Ject 9 tonearm (not the 9c or 9cc apparently.)
There are two 3mm allen key screws near the rear of the base of the tonearm to fine-tune VTA, but they lay BELOW the horizon of the tt plinth! There's no room to fit an allen key in there! (see pics)
I resorted to just adding another slipmat, but even tho the VTA is now properly placed (and VTF as well) it rakes across the lead-in grooves something fierce! It'd be nice to be able to correct the VTA the proper way, I assume that would just solve the problem properly... Any tips?!

Thanks for any help

You may need a ball end allen wrench

Those are meant for using on an angle, I assume?

yes, but looking at the picture the cap screw may be too deep. You may also try modifying yours by heating and bending the tip at a small angle.

Nabbed a ball-end allen, friggin screw feels like it's glued in! Don't wanna force it too hard, I'll have a go at it again tmrw. The OLD cart (Ortofon 2m Blue) was the skipper, the new one (Benz Wood SL) doesn't glide to the 1st track like the other did. So I'll just start burnin' the puppy in for the night :)
Thanks for the tips!!

Those TT’s came with a special Allen tool, with its short section much shorter, in order to fit between the bezel and the arm base.

You can somehow cut/shorten a regular Allen key to make your own tool.

Cheers,
Luis

Thanks Luis! Just ordered one on amazon :D
I bought the turntable used for an awesome price, so it didn't come with its literature or tools
