Garrard 990B Turntable not spinning

Post by williamdickman » 22 Jun 2019 21:54

My motor runs but turntable not spinning; new belt replacement made; motor appears now not having enough torque to manage or spin turntable. It previously worked or spun normally. I believe my belt to placed properly but it has been a long time since I attempted re-assembly; maybe I'm missing something. Suggestions please? :)

Mysterious symptoms. Pictures might help. Could something have gotten jammed under the platter? Or by 'long time since I attempted reassembly' do you mean a decade or two of the grease drying up and getting hard? If the table sat unused for a long time, the most obvious culprit is hardened lubricants, and Garrards are notorious for such - though I suspect that it's not so much Garrard or the lubricants they used, but how long they've been around. Most tables that are decades old have problems with similar issues. That describes most tables, of course, since the heyday of vinyl is long gone, but the more automatic functions involved, the worse the results of aging.

Thanks Nat. I had previously de-greased entire machine before re-assembly, replaced belt, and it worked fine; but still had to re-solder cartridge/audio wires. I finally did that recently after a four year hiatus (illness) but now motor is running but not apparently generating enough torque to spin turntable. Turntable spins freely if I remove drive belt. Mystery for sure!

Belt would also be positioned on underside of turntable flange. This is the correct positioning as far as I remember. Cooments?

Wouldn't the motor simply die as opposed to losing power enough to spin turntable?

Have you disassembled the motor and polished the spindle, sometimes a bit of dirt is enough to slow it down. They are not that strong to begin with.

A bit of a polish is good enough but I had a B&O that needed the bushing reamed. Beobloke, a member here, suggested it, nothing else worked.

Take the motor apart, if you have not done so already, and go through it thoroughly making sure the self aligning bearings are free and the shaft well polished. Use the thinnest oil you can find to re-lube it.

While you are at it give the edge of the idler a gentle rub with a plastic scourer, might help it grip better.

Deglazing the idler edge may help. An emery board if, you know any females who use them, is better than sand paper because it can be held flat easily, but sand paper is okay.
Rubber Renew is another possbility, and that can be used on the belt also.

I'm wondering if mechanisms that engage gear on platter hub might need lubrication to reduce drag and allow turntable to spin? Does anyone know which points below deck need particular attention? Thanks again.

Re-lubed mechanisms, table now turning. Next question. Do cartridge pins need to be connected to colored wires in any particular pattern based on audio output connections? See pics.

They do. Red is R+, Green R-, White is L+, Blue L-. But if appears that Garrard has used black rather than blue. The yellow wire is the arm ground.
The arrangement of pins on cartridge bodies varies so you have to look at the markings on the specific cartridge to see if they are correct.
