Getting filament onto SME guide wheel on Anti Skate.

Post by goatbreath » 20 Jun 2019 13:57

I decided to use a heavier tracking cartridge..
So I needed to fit my heavier anti skating weight on my SME S2 detachable headshell model....
On my other 3009 S2 detachable the loop can go through the side part and miss the wheel.
Then it can be pulled into the centre of the wheel, there is a little space,
there isn't on this one..
I have done tests with the Hifi news record etc..
there appears to be no sticking with the bias thread one the spindle of the wheel,
I would rather it was on there properly.
I also want to be able to change between the 3 and 5 gram weights easily..
The loop that goes on the bias rod stops the filament going through the small space available on the wheel..
Has anybody any tricks/ideas for getting the filament on the wheel..??

I got it on there finally..
That will be my tonearm for tracking over 2 grams I think..
The threads are not easy to change..

I also have two 3009-S2's with detachable headshells. I looked at my AS weight pulley for one of them (the second one is hiding from me at the moment). The monofilament loop and knot fits through the space on top of the pulley - but just barely. My OEM monofilament thread measured 0.18mm diameter. Maybe yours had been replaced along the way with heavier fishing line? Older 3009's just had a wire loop with no pulley - more friction but that might not be a problem if you plan on using a heavier tracking cartridge. It would be much easier to thread the wire loop instead of the pulley.

It was the knot that was the problem,it was a newish piece of filament, but a proper SME part from a reliable suppler..
By repeatedly squashing the filament loop,I got it through the space..
The wire loop is a good idea if I go ahead with my original plan..
All is sounding good just now though..
The bass seems a bit better on the wheel rather than on the wheel pin..

I may use the one I have worked on for cartridges that track over 2.2 grams
and my other for under that on the other set up....That seems a good dividing line.
