can you mount a stanton discmaster v3 on a Sony ps lx 2 tone arm

I was wondering if a Sony ps lx 2 dd turntable can mount a Stanton discmaster v3 cartridge? Or do I need a special headshell.

Hi,
short answer, no! The Sony mostly comes fitted with an integrated headshell cartridge, there is a version of the headshell with slots for standard half inch mount cartridges, but it is hard to find. The main problem is that the headshell mounting is not a standard ‘sme’ size fitting, it looks the same but is smaller.

Much thanks for the reply, currently it has a pickering v 15 and sounds good I found stylus's for it and will use that. Is a pickering a 1/2 inch cartridge?

No, this model Sony takes an oddball headshell. If you can find the headshell with slots for 1/2" mount cartridges, you can use the 1/2" mount version of the Discmaster on it. But not the integrated headshell version (both types were available from Stanton).

Hello tomanter,

Since the Stanton discmaster v3 is an integrated cartridge & headshell with a standardized SME-type connector for most tonearms [which is super convenient for DJs], it cannot be mounted on the Sony ULM straight tonearm.
The Sony PS-LX2, available worldwide, introduced in 1981-it uses their proprietary ultra low mass "duralumin" tonearm, which has a proprietary connector for the headshell. It's similar to the SME design, but smaller for lower mass.
The PS-LX2 was available with or without a cartridge. In some markets the cartridge was either a pre-mounted 1/2" Sony cartridge, or an integrated headshell-type Sony cartridge, with the ULM connector. For models sold without a cartridge, Sony included the SH-94 [4.2 g.] plastic headshell so that any 1/2" cartridge could be mounted. Other models from Sony [PS-FL1/3/5, PS-LX5/X55/X600] which also employ the ULM tonearm, were supplied with the SH-151 [5.2 g.] aluminum headshell which came in two styles, with no model number difference. One style has a matte finish overall and the other looked similar, but on the top-where "Sony" is painted, it's machined and polished, which added more shine/"bling". Not too rare, due to Sony mass-producing turntables using this ULM arm [which Sony never officially named, only calling it: "Sony straight, Low-mass Tonearm"] you should be able to get an SH-94 or SH-151 online, and use any standard 1/2" mount cartridge. Be aware though, that the VTF adjustment range of this tonearm is only 0~3 grams, DJ cartridges are usually designed to track heavier, usually at 3~6 grams. So even though you could mount the cartridge, it won't be compatible if you can't adjust it to the correct Tracking Force.

-I hope this helps!
