Clockwork orange Transcriptor

Post by vintagevinyllover » 16 May 2019 18:33

So yesterday I touched the Transcriptor turntable used in Kubrick’s film of A Clockwork Orange. It looks brand new. I’ll post a pic if anybody interested but the cambi of author + film director + deck + Beethoven is a compelling statement.

Hi, Nice turntable. It looks like a variation of the one I have. Mine is a Transcriptor Saturn with the Vestigal tone arm (a real chore to set up properly). The dust cover on mine is not original. The cartridge is an ADC XLM. One of very few common ones that has enough compliance to use that particular arm. The one in your photo seems to have one of the Hydraulic arms.

For the 1971 film Kubrick used props and objects that were in production but had a futuristic look. The idea was to create a near-future that was also believable and recognisable. There were no other details about the Transcriptor given at the exhibition but it’s the hydraulic reference model, which I think came out after the Saturn. I don’t know if the date 1964 refers to gammon’s original design or to the year this one was made, though 8 think probably the former. This has 6 supports/weights instead of 5 and a hydraulic paddle/liquid arrangement said to reduce mains electricity and motor speed variations.

They just got a transcriptor at the vintage hi fi museum in West Hartford, CT. I saw it last Wednesday. I don’t know what exact model it is but it was cool to see it.

Theirs needs a belt and they have no plans to restore it- just a display piece for them. It has the dust “box” around it with the hinged lid. It would probably clean up well.
