Found a Dual 1219 On Craigslist, buy or not?

Post by WolfLordTK » 15 Apr 2019 06:25

I am looking to get into vinyl and turntables and saw this listing for a dual 1219 on craiglist and was wondering if it was a decent idea to pick up and if there is any restoration work or missing parts that i would need to put into it. Any advice would be helpful here.

That would be a project.
It would need to be cleaned, not only of dust and dirt, but of old gummy lubricants, then relubricated.
The steuerpimpel would probably need replacing, and possibly the stylus.
The idler wheel would also need work.
There is no base, but it would not be hard to make one.
When completed, it could be a good turntable.

For this model, you would want to make sure the dearing ring is not broken or your looking at some fairly difficult repair work. You can search this forum for more information on the issue. Price seems a bit high to me. Original bases and dust covers can be found on ebay.

I would pay no more than 25€ for it due to condition its in. Could have broken parts that is really hard to replaced - Duals are complex mechanics. But I agree it would be rewarding to get it to work and cleaned.

Yes quite a project there. For a starter probably not the best choice and going to cost you a few $$ to get up and running.

There's a few interesting tables for sale in your area. There is a Technics SL-1210 Mk2 at $350 and a SL-1200 Mk2 at $400, both with dust covers, headshells, cartridges (the 1200 looks to be the better of the two - appears unlikely it's been DJ'd much if at all). A Pro-Ject Debut III with acrylic platter upgrade for $300.

As far as less expensive tables, there's a Sony PS-T25 for $85, and a couple P-mount tables in about the same price range.

Always factor in a few $$ for getting a new needle for the cartridge, unless the seller can verify the one provided is new or low hour. Also, what are you planning to play it through? Does your amplifier or receiver have a phono input? If not then you'll need a phono pre-amp to connect it, available from <$30 to >$3000!

I dont mind if it takes me a year to finish and complete it, likely would try to haggle the price down to around $60 given condition. I'm used to taking apart complex things and fixing them. I have completely disassembled and re-pasted a 10 year old laptop and my dad has experience with cars. The plinth is not a worry and there seems to be a lot of guides online for repair, thanks for the advice you all. I think I will pick it up as I love to have a project to work on. If I can't end up fixing it there are places that I could send it to. An ebay seller also has parted out a turntable so it is possible for me to get parts there.

Also the reason I had been looking at something like that even if it will be a large project is that i currently do not have the cash available to go fro the more expensive turntables such as the Technics.

If your handy and enjoy fixing stuff, then go for it. I had a lot of fun repairing my 1219, and it sounds excellent. The usual warning you will find in these forums is to not force any of the controls until you have disassembled and relubed it. The speed lever and multi/single play lever especially. There are some parts that can break if the lube is dried like glue and it's not fun to repair them.

Just realize that it will probably need heavy restoration. You may be able to find a mint or very good one if you search. Figure out just how much you may spend on a restoration, and take it from there.

Maybe look at other Dual models if it doesn't have to be a 1219.

If you go to inspect it, check the outer ring of the tonearm pivot assembly. That outer ring should feel tight with no movement. If it moves loosly up and down, then the ears broke off and it will be a major headache to fix.

i got an 1219 from goodwill for $45, it came with base, v15 typeII cartridge with no stylus, no dusk cover.
it needs motor bearing lubrication, steuerpimple, tonearm is still a little binding. i agree it is a nice built turntable if it is fully restored, but it really takes patience, skill and luck.

A nice project and I agree you could ask him what his best offer would be...You could counter with $60 and see what he says...I've never been afraid to haggle on a turntable if there were any issues, and #1 here is no dust cover, no plinth and it will probably need a new stylus...It does come with the tall spindle, which is a plus, though...When member BMRR shipped his 1219 to me, it was also in a rough state, but I had the pros here in Detroit do the work on it, and it came out just fine...I wrote all about it here...

https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_f ... p?t=107326

I've always said, too, that if you have the time, the inclination, a few tools and some patience, any turntable like this can be brought back up to snuff...It's a great Dual and even if you had the pros repair it, it would be worth bringing back to life...If you're willing to do the work, I would start by downloading and reading the manual here on VE...

https://www.vinylengine.com/library/dual/1219.shtml

It's an absolute stunner, for sure, and would be a great centerpiece, once fettled properly...Of course, being the completist I am, I thought you might like to see a few other "projects" in and around your area that you might not have been attuned to...

A $20 Phillips...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/e ... 58804.html

A linear Technics...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/e ... 87670.html

For $35, another starter project...

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/esd/ele ... 92770.html

For $40, there is this one needing work...

https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele ... 04875.html

Another Technics for $50...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/e ... 39396.html

A Pioneer for $65...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/e ... 96427.html

Another Pioneer for $70...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/e ... 54536.html

There was this Dual 504 for $95...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/e ... 23313.html

If you stretch your budget to around $100-$200, there were these...

A Technics belt drive...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/e ... 52365.html

Another Pioneer...

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/ele ... 71698.html

Another Techie for $125...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/e ... 46599.html

Another Phillips for the same price...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/e ... 51646.html

You could also get this nice-for-the-price Dual here...Absolutely nothing wrong with giving some love to this fine 1209!

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/e ... 56439.html

At $140, we have this decent Sanyo...

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/ele ... 99727.html

Here's another great Dual...

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/ele ... 60835.html

At $150, you're looking at this Yammy...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/e ... 70191.html

For $175, you have the choice of another Dual, the 1249...

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/e ... 25730.html

Or this fine Elac...

https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/ele ... 44396.html

And then, at $195, we have this peachy Mitsubishi...

https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/ele ... 14609.html

That's a "cowabunga" in Cucamonga, dude!

And last, but not least, once you hit $200, you can get into full-on Marantz territory...

https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele ... 38276.html

There's a lot of vintage cool there, my friend! 8) I still think the 1219 would be a worthwhile project to reclaim, though, but if you know me, I have to put all of your vintage options on the table...Maybe something else will speak to you there...Personally, though, if I found a 1219 like that one, and could haggle it down a bit, it would definitely be worth the time and effort put into it when finished...Even at $100, not bad, but you could still try for a better price...Of course, I'm (in the words of Dale & Grace), "leaving it up to you"...Keep us posted on how it all turns out, but just know that should you need any help, the Engineers here are a great resource and would be more than happy to help! I've learned quite a bit from them and I've made some great friends here, so if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

Someone is bound to have an answer! :D

As much as I love Dual 1200 series TT's, I wouldn't pay over $10 for that.
It's just not financially feasible with all that's needed to restore that.

With all the options VinylMaster pointed out, surely there's something else that needs some loving care that has some light at the end of the tunnel.
