elac miracord 50h - what kind of stylus?

Recently, somebody gave me an old (1970s?) Elac Miracord 50H turntable without stylus. I am no expert in this, but I would like to make it sound again. The mechanism - I mean the moving parts, the speed adjustment and so on - seems to be okay (sorry, if I don't use the correct english terms...).

The stylus carrier (?) was still there, but without a needle. The label says "D 444-12". I have attached a picture of the cartridge (from underneath).

It seems that nowadays you can only buy clones of this stylus (not too expensive by the way...). Should I just buy one and try it out? Or should I take different one? The whole thing doesn't have to be first class - just for my personal use. I'm looking forward to helpful suggestions.

The 444 appears to be a decent cartridge, but there doesn't seem to be a wide range of replacement styli around - certainly not original (OEM) anyway. Thakker also has a generic replacement.

Elacs are pleasant cartridges, and if you can get a good replacement, I'd go with it.
There is something to be said for not disturbing those cartridge leads - they can break off, and then you have a fiddly job ahead of you.

Nice table BTW, I have three Elac's. Never yet come across one of their cartridges though. I keep an assortment on hand of cartridges to use on them but all of those are American.

Elac STS*44 line is pretty good and are really loud 11mV versus 5mV common so you get plenty of headroom. Also they should deliver range of 10-24K. I have 244 and 344. Generic styli are OK as far I can hear. If you buy one you want to make sure what first number it is intended to. These all fit to the cartridges so if it is advertised as 144, 244, 344, 444 it is most likely 144. Or you could buy the cheapest you find and try the cart out. D444e is elliptical and D444-12 spherical. If you like the sound look for more specific stylus.
Jico makes them too

Uncharacteristically for Gary, there's no sourcing info for that one. If it's Pfanstiehl I'd stay away.

Funny, I would expect if OEM ELAC stylii were available, they would be in Germany!

Perhaps a year or two ago, a friend in the UK got me two "generic" D 344 E stylii off of eBayUK...and they came from Germany. Black fingermount, so that would be more like the 444 than the 344...

"Hersteller im Sinne des Produkt-sicherheitsgesetzes:

DOS Distribution of Sound GmbH, Rudolf-Diesel-Str. 1, 53879 Euskirchen Tel. 02251/7749300

E-Mail: info@dos-hifi.de www.dos-hifi.de"

I hope that this helps. I have one on my 344 that is mounted in my Rega Planar P3, and it sounds excellent, no issues. And it tracked very, very well on the test record that the salesman used at Natural-Sound when he mounted it for me.
Keep your ELAC running!

thank you very much for your answers! i think i'd go for the product that bill just suggested.

still i would like to know what you think of this one e. g.:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Nadel-Elac-D-34 ... 1742482376

it's cheaper, but anyway: when in doubt i'd rather choose the more expensive one.

Ah, more expensive? Then you want THIS ONE! https://www.ebay.de/itm/DIAMANT-JICO-EL ... SwMuBchVpG

Actually, it probably is much better as it is JICO manufacture. But to start out, the one you have chosen is probably fine.
The original color would have been black, but that does not matter. The shape of the fingermount is correct, and actually being white it is easier to see where your stylus is on the record, I have found with black it is harder.

The tracking force with this stereo cartridge is .75 - 1.5 grams. Unplug the turntable from power, so it does not start automatically when you move the tonearm. Slide the stylus into the cartridge body, replace the cartridge holder carefully back into the tonearm, turn tracking force dial on tonearm to "0" and balance the arm so it is perfectly horizontal by moving the counterweight at other end of arm...I think you loosen a binding screw to move the weight? Then, carefully place arm onto its rest and set tracking force dial to maybe just a little over "1." Set anti-skate dial to same setting and you are good to start. Make sure you have a record on the turntable before you plug back into electric power, as the turntable may want to start automatically on its own, having sensed that the tonearm was moved... You do not want the new stylus to come down on anything but a record!

Good luck!

thank you! i have just ordered the stylus i found the other day (for 21.95 euros). i will try it out and tell you how it works. just one more thing: in the description underneath this ebay offer i found "tracking force: 2.0 grams". considerably more than 0.75 - 1.5 grams. what do you think?

Depends on stylus construction and if that's what's recommended, it's a good place to start.

Two grams is pretty common for older styli. "The lighter, the better" does not necessarily apply and is not a blanket rule when it comes to these things.

Fun trivia: ELAC invented the moving magnet phono cartridge, and when Shure started making moving magnet cartridges, they copied ELAC's design... and Audio-Technica's first MM cartridge was a copy of Shure's copy. AT eventually came up with their own unique dual-magnet design, but Shure's MM philosophy never really ventured too far from the ELAC original.
