Post by goatbreath » 11 Mar 2019 23:11

My yoke and counterweight look a bit dirty..
I need to give my SME 3009 S2 a spruce up in general..

I'm not sure if it's the "best" thing to use but I used Isopropyl alcohol to clean my tonearm. It's an Audio Origami modded RB250 which I have just bought second hand. The wand has been stripped and polished. There was no real oxidation or verdigris on it, however it looked like someone had wrapped tape around it. It did a good job of getting rid of tape residue and fingerprints off the arm.

Acetone will work, and so will lacquer thinner. Just make sure to use all the standard precautions.

Cheers,
Al

It must be really dirty. .
You could try some plain white vinegar

Vinegar has been long known as a good cleaner . It's been said that if you add a tiny bit of baking soda to the vinegar, it will a eliminating the odor a bit as well as increase its cleaning power a bit .

It is more like stains than dirt,a darker colour of silver..
Maybe someone has cleaned the muck off but the stains have remained..
It doesn't look that bad really..
It would look even better without the marks though,which aren't that vivid..

Hi,
isopropyl alcohol would be good to remove dirt. I won´t recommend aceton or things like that, because it can affect the plastics, e.g. the knife bearings.
If it is stains you can try Autosol metal polish. This worked pretty well at my 3009 counterweight.

Cheers Felix

Mine has tiny spots which seem to be corrosion. Can't be cleaned off. I treat it as extra character :)

Speaking of vinegar......

You can make you own dusting spray .... to dust your audio hardware and other household items.....
Without a spray , you are often just pushing dust around.

* 1 cup water
* 1/4 cup vinegar (cuts through grease and grime & disinfectants)
* 2 tsp olive oil (shines and protects wood)
* 10-15 drops of Lemon essential oil* (makes your home smell naturally fresh and clean!)
* Spray bottle

The lemon oil is optional of course but, it's nice to have .

I use this spray (with a microfiber dusting cloth) and it works great . :)
