Thorens td160 motor wont work properly

Post by Patrick Spader » 23 Feb 2019 11:32

Hey guys - im an electrical novice and my thorens td160 motor wont run after applying dynamat to the underside of the top plate. Dunno what ive dont wrong........

At first it did run but the problem was i couldnt turn it off even when the selector lever was in the "0" position. It ran on 45 and 33 and off position had to turn off the power from the power point to stop it running.

I then fiddled around a bit removed the ground form the subchassis that had no effect - reconnected it and put the inner platter on and now it doesnt work at all.

There was no burning smell or electrical spark, what could be wrong??

By the way it was running super quiet after the dynamat could barely hear any motor noise even with a stethoscope!!

Thanks in advance

Patrick

I would check the selector wiring/for issues initially. Sound like something has been disturbed and the selector is not telling the motor what to do.

Can you post a picture of the 33-0-45 switch seen from subchassis ?

If you go on YouTube, copy & paste this in the search bar; Adjusting the microswitch on a Thorens TD-16X turntable. Done by Dave from VinylNirvana. This should solve your problem.

BTW, did you find any improvement since that sub chassis & chassis dampening ? It's the only tweak I did on mine that brought absolutely no difference in playback listening time.

Thanks for the helpfull suggestions. The motor has decided to start working again but its still wont turn off in the "o" postion!

Bernard1 yes this is what i think the problem is too. Here are some pics. First pic is with lever on 45, second pic is "0" and last pic is with lever on "33" position. tscapital. I havent been able to play any vinyl so so cant comment on any improvement except to say that before adding dynamat i could hear the motor through the toplate if i used a stethoscope. Now even with the stethoscope i can barely hear it! I also have a DIY srm motor thrust bearing and that quietened the motor considerably.

Well after moving the micro switch closer to the lever it still runs in the off position. Faulty switch or could something else be the problem?

It can be your switch that is gone faulty. Yet it's rather odd that it only started after the 'dynamat' dampening modification. If ever, I have a spare original Thorens switch. It came from a Thorens TD160 'E' and was fully functional until it's dismantlement.

So unless your TD160 has such big PCB with cables clip-on interconnect, it should still do the job, but you'll need to solder them cables to the switch. If ever you'd consider that option PM me. And thanks for your feedback on the dynamite improvement.
