Rega Planar 1 or Pro Ject Debut Carbon DC

Post by Josem » 19 Feb 2019 00:14

Dear. I need advice that is neutral. I live in Uruguay, South America. At these places there are not many offers of audio components of good quality. I'm thinking of replacing my Aiwa AP2400 turntable with AT 440mlb for a Project Debut Carbon or a Rega Planar 1. It is the offer that is achieved here (U $ S 600 and 790 respectively). I have read a lot of information and have seen several reviews, but all of them give me the impression that they are not objective, if not influenced by favorable impressions of their owners. I would like to hear your sincere, objective opinions of one and the other. Which is better suited to my input audio system, formed by Marantz PM6006; Marantz CD5400; Van den Hull cables; acoustic boxes B & W DM602. Greetings and thanks.

I’ve not heard the Project but here is a video of someone comparing the two (with a Sony)

Your current table is direct drive type offering superior specs compared to these entry level belt drives. Consequently the final result may be disappointment.

It is true. The turntable Aiwa AP2400 has specifications that are superior to Rega and Project.
But I have read how much the tonearm influences next to the cartridge on the final probe. I refer to undesirable colorations and resonances.
As Aiwa AP2400 was made in 1982, I suppose that the Rega or Pro ject carbon tonearms must be superior in that sense.
I am happy with the combination of Aiwa AP2400 and Audio Technica AT 440 Mlb, but I have not been able to compare with the turntables of Rega and Pro Ject.
I think that in case of doubt and looking at the $ 600/790 Project / Rega, I will stay with Aiwa AP2400 (cec chuo denki st540).
Greetings.

The white trim is sharp looking. I think you are wise to be cautious.
