Rega RP1 issue. help

Post by Sneddas » 18 Feb 2019 21:53

Hi, I have a rega rp1 turntable which I upgraded to the rp3 performance pack.

Long story short the head shell turned out to be twisted and the tone arm was replaced. The turntable I have is the 2016 record store day limited edition.

The issue I have is with the new tone arm/cartridge. I have set it to 1.75g and am having all sorts of playback issues, mainly sticking and distortion.

The vinyl seems to play ok for a few minutes then starts distorting. When I take the record off and check the weight it has always moved, for example from 1.75g to 1.85g. It seems there’s too much pressure forcing down on the cartridge. Has anyone else had this issue? Any ideas?

A small change like that in tracking force won't have much affect, but to the extent it does, it should help with your problems. It sounds like there may be bearing problems - is it a new arm (obviously it is right off the production line, but has it been owned before)?

Have you checked the cartridge alignment?

Which cart is it? I had similar(?) problems with Rega Exact. It played ok for a couple of minutes and then suddenly distorted like crazy. Lifting the arm and lowering it back helped for a couple of minutes and then the distortion was back. It was a faulty cartridge.

Hi, thanks for all your replies. Yes it’s a new arm, and the cartridge is a bias 2.

If I understand correctly, with this arm and the bias 2 you simply push the counter weight all the way forward and start playing records. Is that correct?

How have you been measuring tracking force?

I’ve got a digital meter to read the tracking force. I think with the original set up I had when I got the rp1 you set the counter weight all the way forward. However that’s because the arm and cartridge were designed to work that way. (Or so I was told).

The replacement arm isn’t the same as the original (it’s a rb100) and the carbon cartridge that cam originally has been replaced with the bias 2, so according to the guy in the shop I bought the iograde kit from the counterweight can’t be all the way forward now.

Get a stylus pressure gauge and use it. Here in the US you have two choices. You can buy an electronic scale from an audio site and pay $50 or you can buy one from Amazon for $20. Yes, they are exactly the same.

To add, I put a record on tonight (led zep 1 if you’re interested) :) started off at 1.75g, distorted around 4 minutes in and ended up at 1.94g. Also think there’s not as much output from the left speaker, and distortion is only in the right speaker. Last time I had this issue it was the other way round. Totally lost! I’ve contacted rega on twitter but no reply as yet

Got a stylus pressure gauge a few days ago, thanks. That’s what I’ve been using. Was £9 off amazon and is really good. :)

As mentioned earlier I would check your cartridge alignment. You should be able to do that with one of the protractors in this site. Also check the cantilever to make sure it is not bent.
If the alignment is OK then maybe the cartridge is faulty. Do you have another cartridge you could try? Failing that, take it to the store you bought the upgrade pack\tonearm from.

Don’t have another cartridge, I’m afraid it looks like another trip to the shop. Still waiting to see if rega have anything to say....
