Sme 3009 series iii weight system

Post by Rallen » 12 Feb 2019 09:49

I am currently in the process of buying a turntable with a sme 3009 series iii arm for the purpose of using the arm on My current turntable.

However, the seller havent done the setup and doesnt know which balance weights are currently mounted inside.

Would this likely be a problem? Or can the weights be replaced if the setup is wrong?

The SME series III balance system is made of different lead weight, that can be combined with plastic spacers in order to match the cartridge weight :

The seller can dismount the counterweight, remove the lid and take a picture of the leads, so you can know how many are present.
You'll have to choose a cartridge whose weight will match the available leads.
If the arm is a III (and not a IIIs) it must be fitted with the damping tank and one paddle at least. Ideally the seller should have the 3 paddles that was sold with the arm. This damping system was available as an option with model IIIs (s for simplified). The counterweight settings are also different with the IIIs.

The seller should provide you with the extra weights that came with the arm. Get the manual here. The damping device is somewhat cartridge dependant. Worth experimenting with.

Thanks guys. Turns out All 10 weights were there.

If i understand the manual correctly, i should use 9 weights and No spacers (7.0-12.0) for My 2M Black (7. 0 i think).

Does this sound reasonable?

You have to set spacers to prevent leads from moving in the housing.
And yes, for 7 grams the best combination is #2.

Referring to the manual, only combinations with an Asterix need spacers?

The combinations with asterisk requires additional spacers.
Other combinations need the provided spacers (5).

If i use All weights but one + a spacer, how many weights is that?

Cant figure out based on the manual whether there is supposed to be 9 small weights or 1 big and 4 small.

The arm was provided, when new, with 1 big weight, 5 small ones and 5 spacers of the same size that the small weight. The big weight is equivalent to 5 small ones.
So all weight but one + a spacer is 1 big weight, 4 small weight and 1 spacer. It's the combination that balances cartridges from 7 to 12g.

Thanks for clarifying. I really dont understand how the same combination can balance out cartridges ranging from 7 to 12.

How is that possible?

Because once you have put the weights in the housing, this housing is moved via a screw that allow the balancing of the arm. For a 7g cartridge the housing will be next to the pivot, for a 12g, far from it. Once the balance is made, the VTF is set by the lateral graduated rider, which was set to 0 during the balance.
