Cartridge Wiring

Post by cpapapietro » 18 Jan 2019 15:14

Hi,
I bought a used Pro-ject turntable and am not getting sound out of the left channel. When I checked the wiring to the cartridge, I notice that with the blue wire (left channel ground?) the wire comes out past the black tape and I can see the end. I'm guessing that this isn't supposed to be like this and is probably the cause of the problem, but would appreciate it if anyone could confirm. Also, hoping that testing it like this didn't cause any damage.
Thanks so much!

Sounds like you're on the right track in diagnosing. Those wires have little slide-on clips on the end which slide over the pins on the back of the cartridge. If you're seeing that the blue wire has disconnected from the clip...yeah, that's a problem. The fix is to re-solder the wire back onto the tag of the clip. It is delicate work, but can be done.

Btw, you haven't done any damage by playing it.
