New member looking for recommendations

Post by Jcellan » 02 Dec 2018 09:02

Sorry if this had been asked before. New to the forum. I just purchased a Technics quartz SL5350 from a antique shop for $45. It functions flawlessly. Does anyone have any recommendations for a head cartridge and stylus. It appears this is all original and was curious what I could do to Help improve the quality. Any Help is greatly appreciative.

If you’re looking at changing the cartridge, the Audio Technica AT95E is highly regarded on this forum. AT is releasing the new design for that line of cartridges to the public quite soon. So, if you can wait a bit, it should be the ticket. I have no idea what the price of the new line is, but there’s a long thread about it in the cartridges and preamps forum. Those folks are “in the know”. Personally, I’ve never heard the current AT95E, so I cannot comment on the tracking ability, sound signature, etc. I do know that it can be bought for a fair price online from several vendors. Another option is just replacing the stylus on the current cartridge. If you can, post up some pictures of the cartridge/stylus and others with more knowledge will be able to Help with that. $45 for a Technics turntable in good condition is a bargain. You did well with that purchase. Welcome to VE and don’t be a stranger.

Sumiku Oyster or Nagaoka MP100 will be much better choice than any budget AT cart. Both available for less than 100 EUR and worth every cent.

If you have pics of that 5350, you should definitely post 'em in my thread here...

...and since you did good buying it for $45 at an antique shop (Whaddya know? My first good TT, a Dual, was $45 at an antique shop!), why not share it here, too... =D>

By the way, welcome to VE...Read a few threads and stick around awhile! :D

I have to finish reading up on how to post pics but the current cartridge is an empire 2004 with the purple stylus. I don’t know if that helps at all.

That Empire 2004 with the purple stylus is no slouch! Have you read this? :-k

http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php? ... ge.507829/

I do have an Empire 2000E/III cartridge and while I'm not familiar with the 2004, it originally had an S912E stylus...While I can't vouch for all EVG styli (I've had some good ones, though, for my Shure), I see that Gary does have a nice S912E replacement here (EVG 4239-PDE) for $29.00...

Others may have some thoughts, too, but that one might be worth looking into, at least...

I recommend the Nagaoka MP-110. It's a very sweet sounding cartridge and should mate well with your Technics turntable.
