Setting up a SME 3009 series 111 tonearm

Post by Rockabilly78 » 13 Nov 2018 15:32

My last question today - are there any videos out there to Help setting up a SME 3009 series 111 tonearm.
As you may have guessed I am new to Vintage Hi Fi and this arm looks complicated so any Help would be gratefully received.

I don't know if there is any video on the net, but the manual (that you can download in the library) is very clear and explain step by step the setting of this arm.

From the picture I can see your arm is set on a TD 160 super. As I have the exact same combination, I'll be happy to Help, if I can. So do not hesitate if you have a question.

It is complicated, but it is worth it. Don't sweat the complexities of the variable mass counterweight right away. Wait until you have used the arm for a while -- it is overwhelming if you try to everything at once. Get the alignment right, and the tracking force and antiskate, and then see.

I found that, while the arm does look very complicated, it's actually pretty straight forward to set up if you have the manual. I like working with this arm, it seems really well thought-out and I like how many adjustments you can make. A very nice arm for high compliance cartridges! It would probably struggle with a modern lower compliance cartridge, though (and forget about the Ortofon 2M series, they don't fit in the headshell).

I find the sme series III to be easy to adjust but one should read the manual carefully. I dont like the way the arm wand comes out, in mine its a bit difficult to take it off and I have to use some force. I also dont like the azimuth adjusment way of twisting the headshell, hard to get it precise. The arm is a good match with high compliance cartridges and sounds very good.

Thanks for all the replies - which are the best gauges I will need in setting up the arm.
