other users of KAB Delrin thrust plate for 1200

Post by audiopile » 21 Oct 2018 07:14

I've just stsrted using the KAB Delrin replacement spindle thrust plates and am frankly surprised how much of a improvement I'm hearing. Recent listening has been a 1200Mk2 that had a fresh conventional thrust plate as part of a spindle replacement less than 100 hours ago -so wasn't worn out. But the Delrin unit seems a lot quieter ? Replacement was more in the preventive maintenance vein than in any expectation of sound improvement - arm is a SME IV /Quintet Black S. Any body else had experience with Kevin's new thrustplates ? What do you think ?

I've been interested in these for a while. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Does the plate fit in an old type spindle assembly with a wider shaft as seen in my sl1700 Mk2 and the first 1200 mk 2s?
Thanks

KAB offers two versions -this was important to me since I have pretty routinely replaced arms and spindle bearings before selling 1200's. That was the good ol days when Technics/Panasonic service centers were dumping parts inventories because the 1200 had been disco'd - and the parts were both cheap and readily available. I got a fine deal on a bunch of very early spindle assemblies that came with the plastic gear attached -and yes- Kevin does make a delrin thrust plate to fit these -BTW-don't remove the plastic gear. Look at KAB's website and you'll see there is a thrustplate for 70-92 models -I think?? that's what you're after -but e-mail Kevin -he will know. probably the easiest significant mod you can do to a 1200 -it can't be assembled wrong and you get his beeswax mod and new oil (lifetime plus supply of oil).

Not to be a party pooper, but the quietness of the Delrin might actually just be the quietness of a new thrust pad. Does Delrin wear faster or slower than the original - that's something that might be a factor.

The 1200 mk2 that I installed the Delrin thrust plate into had a fresh OEM thrustplate( probably lots less than 200 hrs. on it when replaced with the new unit) - in terms of variables-hadn't done the beeswax mod -did do it with the Delrin thrustplate. After a short run - there was a definite dimple in the stock thrustpads plate. Does anyone know what material the original OEM thrust plate was coated with ? Whatever it is -seems fairly soft ? I'd be really surprised if the new thrustpads don't wear slower than the OEM -but only time will tell ? And Kevin's trackrecord is pretty darn impressive.
