Technics SL-23 vs SL23A

Post by theslut » 20 Aug 2018 08:42

Hello,

Can anyone tell me the differences between the SL-23 and the SL-23A? I have the SL-23A but there isn't so much information to be found on this unit compared to the SL-23. I would presume there is some minor change between models.

There are manuals for both in the VE Library. There might be something there.
The plinth of the SL-23 is vinyl-covered particle board. What is the SL-23A?

Cheers,
Alec

There is no English manual on the site for the SL23A but looking through the German manual I cannot see any difference between the two units. Maybe the difference is the material used for the plinth.

I am not sure what it's made of. Has no vinyl covering at least. The turntable is very light compared to my AT LP120USB.

Do you know if an Ortofon 2M blue is a suitable upgrade for the SL-23? Thinking of buying one.

The SL-23 plinth was about 1/2 inch, or 13mm thick.
The 2M blue is a very nice cartridge. Go for it.

Cheers,
Alec

Now I had a closer look it indeed seems to be a vinyl covered particle board.

If i tap the plinth slightly you can hear a knocking sound through the speakers. I presume this unit could be very sensitive to vibrations.

Almost any turntable will pass a knocking on, suspended ones less so. Don't worry about it.
The vinyl-covered particle board is actually very good at damping vibrations, much better than a plastic shell.
The SL-23 I had was bought with the intent of converting it to a record cleaning machine. When I put on a headshell with cartridge to try it, I was startled at how good it sounded. It was given to the daughter of a friend, who was interested in older music and records.
Put a Blue on, align it properly, and enjoy.

Cheers,
Alec

Pretty much all SL23's have been plagued by issues with dirty speed controls resulting
in RPM variations while playing, clean those pots.
