used pioneer pl 516

I've been looking through adds and have found a few older turntables,
Pioneer PL 516 for 190.00 US
" PL 200 For 190.00 US
PL 300 For 90.00 US
" PL 400 For 120.00 US
from what I can find the 516 is the best of the bunch, my only concern is the age and availability of parts if needed

My preference would be the 300: quartz lock direct drive (stable speed and no belt to worry about). The only parts you should ever need to replace are head shell, cartridge, and stylus, none of which are model-specific.

Hi, I really like the Pl 516 even though it is a belt drive it is a very nice turntable. And it has a strobe light and pitch controls so you can keep the platter speed steady with that. The biggest problems with the PL200,300 and 400 are the rubber boots that go over the springs for the platter and tonearm suspension. These rubber boots fall apart from age and they are not available any more. I have serviced quite a few of these models and everyone of them the boots were bad. And over the yrs I have never been able to find anything that fits to replace them. What happens when the boots go bad is the tonearm base will drop down and become lower then the plinth. After a while this gets so bad that the tonearm starts to miss track. The only repair I have found is to put the shipping screws back in under the platter to raise everything up and level again. But doing this removes the suspension so the turntable must be placed on a solid surface so the tonearm does not bounce every time someone walks by. The Pl 516 does not have any suspension and the base is composite wood instead of plastic. Depending on where you live $190.00 is not to bad a price. But make sure the turntable has at least been serviced for that kind of money. I hope this helps.

I would eliminate the PL200 at that price and possibly the PL400 if you don't need an automatic.

Out of the remaining two

Reasons to go for the PL516
- very pretty (subjective of course), classic 70's look
- Simple, clean wood/chipboard plinth - can be veneered
- Conventional electronics
- Will hold its value
Against:
- expensive, It should be in excellent condition for that price.

And the PL300
- Understated looks, I think the black PL300X is the better colour option
- Pioneer's coaxial suspension
- Quartz speed stability
Against:
- Lots of plastic

I don't own a PL 300 but if it's like the PL400 it may feel rather plasticy.

The PL 516 uses the suspension feet too, just not attached to the plinth. If the feet are dry rotted, you will have trouble with isolation.
You can replace them with foam isolation feet.

For $190 it should be in tip top condition to be considered.
But it's a good solid table and is easy to align.
Just make sure it has good feet.

thanks all
both those, the 516 and the 300 are out of my way and the 516 isn't in mint condition and was just informed that the belt broke today, not that its that expensive of a fix but does take it over 200 bucks in not mint condition. I was pretty sold on the 300 until I read about the feet issue. I will ask seller tomorrow about them, I have a technics from 85 or 86 that has rubber feet with springs and they have not broken down at all and have out lasted the motor, that's why I'm in the marked for a new table. I did the rounds of all the electronics stores, pretty much all s**t from what I could tell. almost bought a pro-ject carbon but at 499 Canadian I ended up saying nope don't need it, so now I'm searching the used market, lots of s**t there to :) so I may be back with more questions
thanks again

Maybe since there are issues, you could use those as haggling points...Maybe he would be open to a lower offer, as long as you don't lowball him too much...Ask if he'd go $150 or even $175, say...Better yet, note the condition issues, how far you'd have to travel and ask the seller what's the best price he could do...Maybe he'd work with you...If he doesn't budge at all, I've never been afraid to walk away from a deal and keep looking...

So asked what his bottom line is on the PL 516 as it sits
he responded
with 150 bucks but besides no belt it does come with the Sure Stylus but no needle
So I would need to find a belt and now a needle and this is an hr away,
PASS
thanks to everyone that responded

Actually $150.00 isn't that bad of a deal...I'll give the seller credit for knocking $40.00 off the original listed price...The Shure cartridge could be good, depending on what it is...And regarding a belt and a stylus, many of our members, including myself, have used the services of Gary@thevoiceofmusic.com. I have never had a problem with any of the styli or belts I've bought from him...And belts are fairly cheap ($10.00-15.00 U.S.) and so are styli ($10.00-30.00 U.S.), depending on the cartridge...Gary is also a top notch guy and many here will agree!

Of course, where do you live, ScotHeath? :-k If you were serious about finding a decent turntable, we could probably Help you find one in your area...Of course, depending on where you live in Canada, that hourlong drive could be your best shot...Some places are just "dead zones" for decent audio equipment...

Don't forget, too, to check garage sales, flea markets, thrift shops, antique shops, EBay and even family members...You never know when someone might have something interesting out there...

The key is...If you want one, don't give up! :D

The right one could even be under your nose! :-k

Thank you for all that info, next week if it’s still available I will go check it out, my search area is basically Edmonton to Saskatoon as I’m often in both city’s. The guy with the PL300 says the rubber feet are in great condition and for 120 Canadian dollars I might just grab in if it’s still available in a couple weeks

Technics SL-5, $30: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-electronics/edm ... nFlag=true

Sony PS-LX2, with original box, M95ed, $140: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-stereo-systems- ... nFlag=true

JVC QL-A2 with Stanton 681EEE $140: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-stereo-systems- ... nFlag=true

Realistic R-8010 $80: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-ipod-mp3-player ... nFlag=true

Etc. .... I'll continue looking later on today. However, it looks like there's a fairly good selection. Of that list above, I'd go for the JVC with the Stanton.

Exactly!

That JVC is one of those "jump on it!" deals.

I just got a return message from the seller of that JVC, says it’s in great working condition when do you wanna take a look? Also received a message from seller of the PL 516 saying he would let it go for 150 as it sits. No belt or needle. Can’t even try it out in that condition, of the 2 which 1. The JVC I’m thinking

Yep. I used to sell that stuff in the 70's. It even has one of the classic cartridges from the day. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but it has "classic" value now. If I didn't already have three turntables, I'd jump on that JVC and ask questions later. :)

Didn't see much, if anything, on Saskatchewan kijiji.

AR XB for $150: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-electronics/edm ... nFlag=true

Craigslist and usedeverywhere don't appear to be used much at all in this area.
