Thorens td 145 tonearm setup

Post by joefom3737 » 22 Feb 2018 15:46

Hi all, I'm the proud owner of a Thorens td 145 turntable. So my question is the following. I set up the tracking force and anti-skating on my tonearm to the best of my knowledge but was wondering what the knob indicated on the picture was for. The knob turns either direction and locks clockwise. What is it for?

Can anyone tell me?

Regards!

Just find out what it's for....auxiliary counterweight (for balancing heavy headshells / cartridges).

Yeah, it's just an "auxiliary counterweight" for heavy cartridges.

Judging by how far forward (towards the gimbal) your main counterweight is, you do not need it.

So, I would suggest that you remove it and re-balance your tone arm.
This will reduce tone arm mass and this can only be a good thing. :)

Curious how you adjusted after removing that aux counterweight, anti-skating, etc. Did you use a tool? I haven't found one good visual (stills or video) on how to adjust the stock TD 145 arm dials, etc.

My memory is that it is to fine tune the balance - you use the set screw to lock the main weight at close to hovering horizontally, and then you use the knob to get it perfect.
